anyone got any tips on how to kill subs. ive set a lot of planes on 50% ASW and they seem to find subs all the time but they never attack. is it something to do with the altitude setting?

I have never sunk a sub with ASW either. I have thought of it many times but I guessed that perhaps you couldnt sink them with aircraft in this game.

I have used both Mavis and Jakes/Petes from tenders, but have never succeeded either. My planes do not even seem to find subs.
Guess I will set them back on naval search soon.

#1 when you send out destroyers or SCs to kill subs DO NOT have them set to retirement allowed.

#2 Subs use night experience most often. If the Jap sub has a night experience rating of 75 and your SC has a night experience rating of 20, guess what happens?

ASW Effectiveness

I don't have the game yet (came today and I'm still at work!) but I wonder if the ASW patrols have an effect even if you don't see subs attacked. I would imagine that there is a decrease in the ability of subs to to attack during a turn in which they have been spotted (this has been modeled in previous Grigsby games) or that sub initiative in a hex is decreased proportional to the ASW patrolling performed in that hex.

Thank you for that tip but we cant sink subs with air. We all know how effective that was during WW2.

Yes I myself have been concerned at the lack of participation on the part of aircraft in the whole sub hunting business in the game I'm playing so far. They seem to detect them fairly well, but never attack. I've tried a bunch of different stuff too like having one group on ASW and another group on Naval Attack, different altitudes, etc.

I don't have any information on the number of Japanese subs sunk by airpower or by destroyers/escorts historically. Jap subs were largely irrelevant due to their use as fleet support rather than merchant hunting. However, Jap subs did sink the Yorktown.

True, but it was a sitting duck. I just read about it again actually in "The Japanese Submarine Force and WW2"

Yes she was being towed back to Pearl after Midway. She was in very bad shape, but amazingly still floating and capable of being repaired. And all this, after having been damaged in the Coral Sea battle also and being repaired in three days to help with Midway. Heck of a ship and good men on board.

The only reason I mentioned the Yorktown is because I said Jap subs were largely irrelevant. Say something like that and some bozo gets on the forum and says : "They were not ineffective, Jap subs sank the Yorktown!!!" There's always someone trying to prove how smart they are, and I don't want a good thread cluttered with someone's attempt to gain self-esteem.

Yes, there will be a patch so keep on writing because Matrix is listening to what we have to say. I think its Mike Wood who is working on it. And yes, air not attacking subs must be fixed in the next patch.

If I recall correctly everytime your recon or Asw spot a sub or any other ship they will attempt to drop their payload on it

In fact in the PBEM against Kid I got a message that goes something like this

Jake spots SS Tunny
SS Tunny hit ++++++

So the Tunny got hit with the jakes payload :)

And jap subs **** near sank the ship carrying the Atomic Bomb to Saipan. Still, the were irrelevant.

They put the North Carolina into drydock for awhile, and blew the **** out of a couple DDs... BUT---
still irrelevant (unless Jap sub doctrine is off, which means the kid gloves come off too)

I'm glad to hear that this at least DOES happen sometimes. Still I have yet to see it in my games.
