Japanese Army Dive Bombers

Back in WiTP the Sonia was a DB and in AE it is a LB.

It looks like the Vals and Kates do a decent job on close air support missions. My WAG is that dive bombing is just a tad more accurate then level bombing <grin>.

For the Japanese light bombers, is there a way to get them to dive bomb?

This is clipped from a previous post:
Mission: Bombing
A/c Type: DB
• Altitude 10-15k
------Diving attack
• Altitude 16-19k
------Glide Attack
• Altitude <1k
------Low level attack
• Altitude 20+ or >1 & <10
------Normal horizontal attack

Diving attacks have a better chance of hitting then the Glide attack
Primary pilot skill NAVAL_BOMB increases chance to hit shipping
Glide attacks have a better chance to hit then a horizontal attack

Diving attack exit altitude is 1-4k
Glide attack exit altitude is 2-5k

I guess what I'm asking is if there is a range where light bombers will act like dive bombers?

TTFN,

Mike

When they glide bomb they will be similar to DBs. You will have to use them in the 10,000 to 20,00 foot range according to an earlier post by one of the developers.

Also keep in mind that just because it was classified as a "dive-bomber" in WitP does not mean it was a "dive-bomber"... [;)]

Was that meant as a criticism of WITP? Or was there some more subtle point you were trying to make?

I recall the devs saying that for AE it needed to have suitable dive breaks to be specified as a dive bomber.

An indication that the research was faulty.

And there are dive brakes and dive brakes...

Yep...I was trying to imply that Witp was the worst design ever...[8|].

No, the point I was trying to make was that the Sonia, Ann, Mary were essentially close support aircraft (ie Light Bombers) and not true dive bombers in the sense of the Stuka...due to the fact that they did not have dive brakes...hence the team decided to classify them as LB's and not DB's. WitP did not have the LB classification.

However due to the wonderful editor should a player disagree with that decision they are free to change the class to DB.

With all that in mind I think I'm going to retire from the forums ...too much hyperbole.

Treespider - if I may be so bold as to toss my two cents in - don't let yourself be driven from the forums if you enjoy posting and discussin AE/WiTP. All I can say is that I didn't take you wrong and my initial post made reference to the Sonia in WiTP being classified as a DB.

WLockard - thanks for the tip. I'll try the glide bombing. It's just that I had really good results from my Vals against ground units and unfortunately there seems to be no upgrade path for light bombers to be converted to dive bombers. And of the six or so DB/TB units I have on the board in my game with Nemo121 (late January 42 in the game) most of them are restricted to Japan. I'd like very much to deploy DB in the PI, Sumatra, & China but there seems to be no option available for me.

If anyone has additional input on close ground support or factors that contribute to better damage against ground units from the air I'd love to hear them.

Thanx much!

Mike

Probably because they really were light bombers...they had no dive brakes, meaning they couldn't dive bomb. [;)]

The Ki-48-IIb is classified as DB for the IJA. They are available 1/43.
