Find out how to plan and execute the expansion of your empire through new colonies, mining stations and construction yards with this latest video
Matrix Games and Code Force (
www.codeforce.co.nz) are thrilled to release
another new video for their highly anticipated 4X space strategy game, Distant Worlds! This latest video details the mechanics behind the planning and execution of your expansion throughout the galaxy, from colonization of new planets and construction of gas and mineral mining stations to the management of your construction yards and resources.
David Heath, Director of Operations at Matrix Games, said, “Distant Worlds provides rich strategic gameplay without bogging the player down in a complicated and involved interface. The ease with which you can plan your expansion throughout these detailed galaxies puts near limitless excitement at your fingertips!”
Distant Worlds is a vast, real-time, 4X space strategy game. Experience the full depth and detail of large turn-based strategy games, but with the simplicity and ease of real-time, and on the scale of a massively-multiplayer online game.
Vast galaxies are made to order: up to 1400 star systems, with up to 50,000 planets, moons and asteroids. Galaxies are so deep, fun and immersive that you won’t want to finish the game... Build, expand and improve your empire endlessly. The galaxy is packed with life and activity. Encounter other empires, independent alien colonies, traders, pirates and space monsters. Explore star systems, asteroid fields, gas clouds, supernovae, galactic storms and black holes. Discover evidence of civilizations long since past, uncovering secrets about the galaxy's troubled history...
Best of all, you can play the game your way: enjoy a quick, intense game in a crowded galaxy or take your time in an epic game spread across a vast galaxy!

Sweet!
So I noticed there's several different types of research stations you can build. Are these limited by the type of planet(s) or space "terrain", or can they be constructed anywhere?
Also, I noticed you can build a "Resort Station" as well. Could you elaborate on what exactly this does and where it can be built?

Nice.
But not many new things. All of this you can see in previus video if you seek hard enough.
But anyway look good.
When we get more?

They are based on the general research category, but their effect also depends on where you build them. For example, you can have a basic research capability in a Starbase, but if you build a tooled out High Energy research station and place it on the edge of a Black Hole, you will get WAY more research out of it than from that floating lab over your planet.
Also, I noticed you can build a "Resort Station" as well. Could you elaborate on what exactly this does and where it can be built?
That's for tourism, of course. [;)] The galaxy is also a beautiful place. Some places are more spectacular than others and people do want to travel and see the sights. There is money that can be made from that and resort stations are part of that. I have an old book called "Tour of the Universe" by Malcolm Edwards and Robert Holdstock here and that's pretty much how I imagine tourism in DW to be.
Regards,
- Erik

THanks for the interesting video. I'm really hoping on another one on combat and diplomacy. Colonisation and ship building seem very easy and well thought about.

Hi. Are there any techs that require specific resources to be availalbe for your empire? Say we have discovered ellerium-115 on one of the planets and have established a mining station/colony there. E-115 has some unique properties and will allow us to research gravity manipulating devices and weapons (either unlock them or just provide a steady bonus for researching them).

I dont know about resarch but it is true with some components for ships/stations. Mean you must have acess to some of rare resources to have possibility to biuld tem.
Also some place ave big bonus to resarch for specyfic branches if you build resarch station in this place.
And btw.
Greetings Okim.

Yes, i know that, thanks. I tend to read forums before posting
Just imagine how it would be interesting to actually hunt for specific resources to unlock certain research. Well, i understand that this may be already introduced as resource requirement for particular ship components, but bonuses for particular tech research may still be an interesting feature...

There are certainly situations where you unlock new technology and find that you now need resources that you did not previously have in abundance, which changes your expansion priorities. Each resource also has a galactic "market" and scarce resources that are important for certain techs can become points of conflict. There are also some unique resources (only one source in the galaxy) that give the owner some really nice bonuses.

Do colony ships require population.

Hi Erik,
What sort of learning curve would someone expect to endure having already played M00, M002 and M003 as well as SEIV?
Screens and videos show what appears to be a lot to keep track of.
Galaxy map looks much bigger than anything I've seen in previous games.
Learning curve comparable to Witp -> AE? More ? Less?[&:]

I missed this when it was posted - I would actually say DW has a very nice and easy learning curve thanks to the automation. It's very simple to learn to start playing and as you get the hang of things and understand more turn off more of the automation and get into the nitty gritty. The learning curve on this is more like HTTR/COTA than anywhere near WITP AE.

Most likely this is wishfull thinking, but is the AI for DW as good as or near as good as the AI for HTTR/COTA ?

It's tough to compare, to be honest, but I would say that the AI for DW is quite intelligent (as AIs go). The automation is certainly much more than just "passable". It reacts and decides in an intelligent fashion, which makes it much more enjoyable to use.

Thanks Erik.
It sounds like the AI in this game will be awesome, can't wait to try it out.
