I just noticed Firaxis announced Civ 5 is under development and scheduled for release in the fall. At first glance the big changes appear to be a change to a hex based map and ranged weapons. Not a lot of details, but a few screen shots.

Yeah!!!.. Loved all the Civ's!!!

If history repeats, it will suffer from many bugs which will go for ages without fixes, and when they are fixed, the package will be worse than it was before.

And of course, every time a new gimmick is added, it will be re-packaged as a whole new game just to milk it for another 6x worth.  People just never learn...[8|]

I can't say I'm quite that exstatic, knowing Firaxis' reputation down this line many times now...

I understand your point, but that isn't the case with the Civilization franchise. They've been very solid products. I've owned them all. The only thing I could never really get used to is the imbalance of units. I mean really... an archer should not be able to take down a tank regardless of experience. But other then that, they're all very good games.

I never played I.. but got years of enjoyment out of II, III and IV.... only one that sucked, I thought was Colonization..

I finally got burnt out on the Civilization series with Civ IV. I just can't see what they can add anymore to make the game really worth buying out of the chute once again. I'm pretty happy with Civ IV and Civ II now but after playing 100's of games of it I just get a little sick to my stomach just thinking about starting over and following the same progression again an again an again as I have in the past. Civ II still holds my interest most because of the talking council members. I suppose Civ V will be great for newcomers to the series that are just turning 10-12 years old and like graphics and stuff that's new vs stuff that's old and great.

Oddly enough, the original Colonization was my favourite of the lot although the magic had certainly gone with the remake. Guess that was inevitable, 'Pirates' was just the same.

I suppose I'll end up buying V just to take a look, but this time I'll wait until they've released the inevitable expansions (or, more likely, the dreaded DLC these days), and the whole lot is available in one box, cheap. It might well be worth more than 'cheap', but a lot will depend on the 'been there, done that' factor, or relative lack of it.

The original Colonization was my favorite, too, Hertston. Unless you include Master of Magic, which is my all-time favorite.

DLC?! I certainly hope not! I was planning on pre-ordering Civ5, but if it's going to include DLC I may wait a year or two for the inevitable compilation pack.

No idea if it will or not. Just pessimism on my part as that seems to be the trend, these days.

Oh this might be a glorious year. The Civ serious is one of those rare series that just won't let go of a player. Like SPWAW, WITP and a couple other games, Civ games have never left my computers. Can't wait.

I see that they've moved to hex based maps, and will have "much more detailed combat". But that's the problem. The Civ Series never really had any good combat at all -- especially in the early game turns, when hundreds of years would pass by -- and nobody is really sure of the scale of the game itself. Ideally, what they would do is scrap the whole combat system, and just evolve something similar to Western Civilization Games Forge of Freedom and Crown of Glory -- you move containers around on the map, and then play a to scale battle on a random hex map.

I will get this game.  However, when is Sid Meir come up something new!  Every game he deleveops seems to be an offshoot of the Civilisation series.

Much of the same really. I have bought most versions 1,3, and 4. I'm a bit impulsive when comes to games though. I'm never really sure if you should be paying a whole new price for mostly just prettier looking versions, in my opinion not a lot of improvement AI wise from 1 to 4, or at least if u put it in dollar terms close to $a250 when you include add ons etc

If it ain't go Sid M its not the REAL thing. I will give it a look however slim the chance it will be on par with Sid M, but I doubt it
