Naval questions

Just getting back into COGEE after a break and what a great game it is. Especially the advanced economy and the diplomacy options.

This time I chose Britain so I could explore the naval game in more detail. It is very good thus far.

Three things I'm not sure about though :

1.What does the asterisk before the fleet commander's name signify--e.g " *Keith's Fleet " ?

2.What do the numbers after the fleet commander's name mean--e.g " Keith's Fleet 15+0 " ?

3.What do the ship symbols in a ship's information bar represent. I'm guessing the strength of the ship ? So three ships mean a strength of 3 that may be reduced by combat ?

Thx

Hi 39Batallain!

I'll  attempt to answer your question though I'm not a 100% on my accuracy!

1.What does the asterisk before the fleet commander's name signify--e.g " *Keith's Fleet " ?

I'm not sure which scenario your playing, but when I looked at the 1792 scenario it is Admiral Howe who has the * before his name.

I suspect the asterisk is there for historical purposes, as Lord Howe was "Lord of the Admiralty", and admiral of the Fleets in 1797.  Plus, if you check the "specials" you will see that fleet has one ship, the Namur, having a "quality admiral" special rating. Which I presume is the ship of Admiral Howe!

2.What do the numbers after the fleet commander's name mean--e.g " Keith's Fleet 15+0 " ?

If you look at the fleets, some fleets may have more ships than the number listed. I found one fleet that said 20+0, yet there were about 32 ships in the fleet. But, most of those ships were not full strength, or had damage that needed repairing. I think what the big number indicates is the strength of the fleet. If there were 32 "full" strength ships then the number would be 32. I'm really not sure why there is the "+0" added onto the number. Mybe the designer was using it to designate something during the design of the game, and then forgot to remove it! [&:]

3.What do the ship symbols in a ship's information bar represent. I'm guessing the strength of the ship ? So three ships mean a strength of 3 that may be reduced by combat ?

It appears that a ship is at max strength when it has 5 ship symbols. If three are present it is 40% reduced in strength.

Finally if you look at the ship pictures, after right clicking on a fleet, you can actually discern a difference between a frigate, a 3rd rate, and a 1st/2nd rate. In that way you can tell how many of each type is in a fleet.
The number designates the strength/damage a ship has in the fleet. "10" = a full strength ship. If it goes down to "0" then that ship is destroyed, and can't be repaired!

I hope I have'nt given any inaccurate information, and that this helps a little!

1) No idea.
2) For the "15+0". '15' is the number of ships in the Fleet. '0' is the number of divisions it is carrying (I think--I am sure about the 15 though). <<EDIT: Monte is right about the #. It is the STRENGTH of the ships divided by the number of ships present. Full strength ships would have '15'. 14 full strength ships + 2 ships each with damage '5' would ALSO show '15' (even though 16 ships present).
3) Undamaged ship strength is '10'. As they get damaged, this number is reduced. When reduced to '0' it is sunk. This number can be restored automatically by keeping the damaged ship in port. Also, the ship has a 10% chance of restoring 1 point while at sea unless you have the upgrade 'naval repairs', then 90% chance.

I THINK the above are right.

Also, as the Brits, pay attention to which ships have admirals in them. Make sure each one of your fleets is led by an admiral!
