Zooming In

I fired it up and was immediately lost - obviously I need to tackle the tutorials and read the manual. One thing i noticed was that I didn't seem to be able to zoom in to my home world as closely as the videos indicated. Is there some setting in the options screen that controls this?

Definitely do the tutorial, read the manual, try the "Fast" Quick Start, etc.
As far as zooming, just use the mouse scroll wheel. There are also preset zoom level buttons next to the minimap. There's been no change in zoom distance since we made the videos.

If you are zooming with the mouse wheel, it only zooms in so far. The last few zoom levels you have to use the keyboard, PageUp and PageDn.

That's the problem - I was using the mouse wheel to zoom. Kind of defies logic that you have to switch to the keyboard.

You will use the mouse wheel to quickly zoom in a lot and the default zoom is perfect for viewing the planet and ships.The closest zoom is much to close for gameplay and would be annoying.I think it makes sence when you play it for a bit.

Yeah, the closest zoom is way too close for constantly using. You can't see enough of the big picture, literally. [;)] I seldom ever used anything closer than the default zoom. My main testing desktop is at 1600x1200. My laptop I tested with was 1366x768. The default zoom was perfect for both of those settings.

Just curious now since I don't have the game yet. If you are at closet zoom level, can you still travel the map? I mean if you keep scrolling can you get to another star system and just see empty space or will you hit an invisible barrie and then need to unzoom to get to another system?
Just curious as to how big everything in the game is.

You can travel all you want in any zoom level, that's not restricting.
