Just downloaded the game, everything seems to work, but on the start up of the game I immediately encountered a problem. I dont see the text of the galactopedia. It is just a white empty field. I can browse through the various topics, but I cant see the text. I hope this issues is simple to solve. I tried reinstalling the game. I have also updated the game to the latest version. Any suggestions?

Could you post a screenshot of what you see and a DxDiag please?

Hi Gertjan
What version of Internet Explorer do you installed?
When running DW, in Windows Task Manager how much free memory do you have?
Thanks Elliot

Erik, I have IE8, but perhaps the installation is corrupt or something. I noticed that the Galactopedia files are *.mht (so archived webpages). Apparently the game needs internet explorer to see them, right? Now I have downloaded the browser Opera, which can also read this type of files. However, with Opera, when I'm in the game and click a link to the Galactopedia the game opens the Opera browser. But at least I'm able to read the information. I will try to install the game as well on my laptop. Perhaps I dont have the problem on that machine. So the galactopedia can only be read with a noncorrupted version of IE8?

Yes the Galactopedia topics are MHTML files - so IE 6, 7 or 8 will work.
Maybe you have Opera as the default handler for MHTML files? If you can change which program handles that file extension (.mht) to IE, you might resolve this problem.

Elliot thanks for the support and the great game so far (only played it for 1 hour today). However, I moved from IE to Opera in order to able to see the galactopedia topics, because IE8 did not work strangely enough. Perhaps it is just my computer and I will try to reinstall windows when I have more time to do that.

Hope you will not mind me posting a screen shot about a similar issue that I have with the GE.

Hi jamesm
What version of Internet Explorer do you have installed on your machine?
Also, is IE your default web browser? Shouldn't need to be for this to work properly - but I'm curious all the same.
Thanks Elliot

Having the same issue as jamesm (files are loading as only text), however it seems to be a problem with IE.
I assume if we could get the files to load up into IE normally, then they would also work fine in game, but I have done a fresh reinstall of IE 8, fiddled around with file types and extensions and it just doesn't want to work. They will load into my roommate's IE 8, however. Very weird.
I was able to load up the files into Firefox with the MAF script add-on, but there are missing elements when trying to load them out of game. When loading in-game through Firefox (if Firefox is set to be the default program for .htm) then it shows all of the information but may load the incorrect page; for example, when clicking on any race in Galactopedia, Firefox opens the information for the Zenox always.

Is there a fix for this issue?

Perhaps reinstalling IE would work? Another partial solution is to install a different browser that is able to read to galactopedia files and than link the files to that browser. However every time that you open the galactopedia the browser will open to show the file. But at least you are then able to reach the important info.

I have a feeling there won't be. Integrating IE into the game was a silly mistake. There's no reason to have it installed if you don't use it, and many people don't use it (including myself). Even after installing it, it doesn't want to read the files properly; and from what I have read the extension isn't even officially supported by IE.
Personally, I've just alt-tabbed out of game, opened them up with FireFox and learned all I can from them that way. The filenames are very descriptive so it's easy to find what you're looking for. The formatting is not quite right, and I can't see the specific bonuses that the races get, but it's better than nothing.

I agree that it is strange that you require IE. I think that browser is one of the worst and is losing market share big time.

I suggest setting the "compatability view" option in IE8 to "on" under the Tools menu and see if that helps. My wife has the 64-bit version and it sometimes won't properly read web pages that the 32-bit version of IE8 will. Worth a try at least. Good luck!
