Sometimes ive ordered ships to attack a dude shooting a gas mine in the same system, then had those ships stand idle for ages.
Another time, ive seen them go back to auto as soon as the enemy was dead.

I know i can just press A, but it doesnt seem to work with several ships selected, and clicking one by one is a bit tedious XD

You can currently only automate individual ships or fleets by pressing the A key. If you multi-select a group of ships, pressing the A key has no effect.

Ships won't re-automate by themselves. I recommend forming those ships into a fleet, managing them that way, instead of just a multi-selected group.

In the Ships and Bases screen you can switch automation on/off for each ship by clicking in the column at far right.
