How do you use them?

Frankly I haven't found any use for them. They're slow, with weak AA and no ASW capabilities. In my experience they are just points for the taking for the Japanese

Convoy escorts from West Coast

Why would you do that? They have no ASW capabilities, they cannot defend themselves against sub attacks

If you mix them up with some other ASW equipped ships they can slow down attacks on convoys

Yep JFK at Grand Harbour. Now I am trying to get a banner of USS Iowa from a pic i have of her in Grand Harbour.

In the game you will always have a problem to put enough escorts with all your convoys instead of using DDs in the low threat areas use PGs and PCs that way you put your best escorts for the high threat convoys.

Even with no ASW, they deter sub attacks on the surface.

That is the way I use them. I put them in with one and two ship merchant ships TFs to force the sub to use their torpedoes if they want to attack or finish off a ship.

I use them on convoys from PH to the forward island bases, and down to Suva/Noumea.  I like having those 6" guns escorting my ships!

How would you use a light cruiser with a convoy? They won't sink subs, but will deal with surface raiders , either AMC's or DD's. And they might serve as good motherships for "PT migrations".  [:)]

I've given all my PGs a minimal ASW upgrade in my mod, along with swapping out the .30s with .50s. I plan on using them for ASW/Convoy work either around New Caledonia or off northern Oz, if they last that long. If any of them make it mid-1943 then they get 20mms, radar and the ones with 4" main guns will get 3"/50s.

FYI, there's an overhead shot of Tulsa on Navsource which shows 4-20mm guns mounted amid ship (2 ea side) and DCPs. In another pic she has what looks to be some type of radar on her fore mast and a DCT on the stern.

Can also add them to Amph TF to soak up gunfire..and those 6" guns are handy supressing defenders.

They are also handy as speed bumps at bases where you think the Japanese might take a flier without KB or much of a surface force and can't hit with LBA.

Some of the US PC's in Da Babe's Lite mod have decent ASW

Having an escort without DCs is better than having no escort. With subs having a tendency to attack escorts instead of the freighters you have a chance that the sub misses the escort (while it would probably hit the freighter) and the sub will attack submerged which gives it a lower hit rate (at least that´s what I´ve heard). And if the escort is sunk, it´s still better than losing a transport with a part of a LCU.
