How do I explore a system?

Ok, I send an Exploration Ship to a Star I never seen before. So when my ship gets there all I see is the sun. How come I don't see any planets or moons or anything else? What am I doing wrong? When I tell it to explore the system 2 seconds later it says it completed it's task. So how do I explore the planets or set the Explorer ship to find the planets instead of the sun now.

I tried looking in the Galacticpedia but I don't see anything. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, I see how it is. I guess some stars have nothing in them. I guess it was a coincidence that my first two star systems I visited, had not planets in them. So my question is since my 2nd star I visited is a neutron star, how do I set up a research lab there if there are no planets or moons? Can I click on the Sun it self to do it? Since the manual said to put a research lab to get extra points out of it for being a netron star

Select a Mobile Constructor and right click the Neutron Star, then menu should say Build a Base>Allowing you to choose which field of research base you want.

You can build it offset from the star too - doesn't have to be right on top of it. Just select your construction ship and then right-click somewhere near the star and select what to build from the pop-up menu. As long as you are in the same system as the star you'll get the research bonus.
