The ideal game

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

The ideal game

I think this is my first post!
I have been reading the forum entries with a great deal of interest and agree with many of the posters who have commented that this is their "dream game". I have progressed from the paper and counter games in the 70's (Wagram;PanzerGruppe Guderian;Arnhem etc). They lacked a solitaire playability and there was little to be learnt without having an opponent anyway.

The counters usually had to be stuck down with blue tac and inevitably got nudged if left for any length of time, the blue tac also removed some of the counter artwork as well as leaving greasy marks on the map

I have really enjoyed reading the AAR and looking at the screenshots and I am eagerly anticipating the release of the game but to echo another post, I'm concerned that there is going to be a steep learning curve to be able to play this game and actually enjoy it, in other words not to get thrashed before the end of 1941!

I did beta test AH Third Reich many years ago but that unfortunately is no longer playable on todays PC's. (I throw that in as my claim to fame ;-) )

I was wondering if anyone remembers the (ultimately vapourware) of IGN's vaunted "Road to Moscow", and whether Matrix had any plans to create something similar? (Guys - I really do love what you are doing with this game btw, I don't want to think otherwise). RtM was envisaged as a real-time game rather than tunr based and - if I remember rightly there was potential for crazy orders to come from Hitler/Stalin, which the player ignored at his peril

I managed to find one reference ot the game http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/131/131163p1.html

6 the number of man! lol
any who no word on games usually, but not always, means they are dead...
It is really hard to split real time and small up and make it work, the best, cough, is the hoi2 idea of 24 segmented hours in a day"realtime" pausable, not a vote for hoi just an observation... realtime is hard strategically

If your looking for a Road to Mosow game then Panther Games is the closest you will get anywhere. Unfortunately they haven't made an East Front game yet. So far A bridge to far and The Agean with a Bulge gane due out soon. If they get sales for the Bulge game then an East Front game is on the cards.

I can't recommend these games enough. buy the Bugle game you will not be disapointed. The forum is at the top of the coming soon forums that this forum is in.

Apparently RtM just didn't work the way they wanted. I imagine PC's at the time just werent powerful enough

I also am looking forward to this game. It looks so far like the ultimate turn based game for me I think.

I just followed you link and loved the map artwork.    More of interest though was the graphical representation of the unit organisation.  Someone posted that the way the unit info is presented (ie as a list) was not so easy to follow - maybe this would help?

I guess it's way to late but I thought I'd offer it up as an idea.

That was me sir

I hope the designers look at this screen shot - if you can move the mouse over the II or whatever and see what was there it would be much better.

This format would be so good !!!!!!

Thanks for the advice - I'm just downloading Conquest of the Aegean and will give that a go.

Anyone know if there is a tutorial or learning scenario with WitE - maybe Poland 1939 [:)] (which was one of my original questions [;)])

There are plans for a tutorial scenario but it's not Poland '39.

Superb...remember there are few user made scenarios....the bulge game will be the one that will have the most user made scenarios as the OOB will be extensive.

Hope you like it...
