Excess energy

Is this used for anything? I notice that guns and shields doesnt use energy. Also, whats the energy collected by energy collectors used for?
guns use energy whenever they fire, check their datasheet. If your excess energy is too low, your ships will run out of energy quickly and fire at a lower rate.
collectors are used to avoid fuel usage on idle starbases.
Now, why does my large starbase with 5 of each labs only produce 30K of each?
