How'd I Lose So Quickly?

Playing a 400 star galaxy with 6 opponents. By year 6 I had 12 colonies (because I was expanding cautiously) and was leading the 3 civs I had made contact with. All of a sudden I get a message that I lost because the (I forget the name of the race) Blue Sluts had colonized 33% of the galaxy.
If the A.I. is expanding so quickly, maybe over-expansion IS the way to go.

Maybe you should've Unchecked all victory conditions and played "Sand Box" open ended game?
The Securans won because they had 33% of all "founded" colonies in the game, Not because they colonized 33% of the Galaxy. In a 400 star galaxy it would be very hard to colonize 33% of the entire Galaxy in 6 years.
Erik warned about the possibility of smaller games running into this "Victory Condition" in an early post on gameplay.

No kidding. The real question is how the A.I. colonized 1/3 of the worlds so quickly.

What do you mean by "founded"? There were several independents populated by the Securans - do they count?

I'm referring to colonies that your empire and the AI empires have went out and sent a colony ship to.
All "founded" colonies plus independent colonies that join an empire are used to calculate the Victory condition of 33%.
But the Securans had founded 33% of the Colonies that all empires had founded to that date to win. They did Not colonize 1/3 of the galaxy's possible colony planets and moons. That's the real point.
If you had 12 colonies and say 4 of the other AI's had similar numbers then combined you all had colonized 60 planets then all the Securans had to colonize to win is 1/3rd of the Total colonies founded so far. In this case a little over 25+ colonies to meet the Victory condition. (the 60 + their # = total, then divided by 3). Understand?

I get it now, thanks. Makes me rethink the victory conditions in my next game [:'(]

One way to use victory conditions and keep things from ending too early is to use the option to only have the victory conditions kick in after a certain number of years.

Is there a dual percentage and minimum # of colonies victory condition?

Securans can colonize desert planets I believe. That's probably how they did it.

I lost my first game in about 15 seconds! And I thought I had "don't check victory conditions for 3 years" selected. Maybe I am mistaken.

Can you continue playing the game while you have already won?

I have found that careful choice of planets you colonize will give you an edge over the AI's quantity approach. Also, if you find the AI's expansion pace too quick, up the quality of your starting system to excellent, while leaving the AIs home systems at average. This way you can expand at an easy pace and still keep up.
