Is there a way to rename planets, ships and fleets?

There is, but I haven't figured out how.
 
You can rename stars with the editor, but I haven't figured that one out either.
 
I'm still in the "What do I do first" mode.

Is there a way to rename planets, ships and fleets?

Yes there is. If you double click on the name of your planet or ship in the bottom left screen it will take you to either the ship screen, fleet screen or the planet screen. Where you see the name of your ship, just click on it and put in a new name.

Also if you use the editor, (this is for stars and planets you don't colonize) just double click on the star, mine or what ever and at the top right, type in your new name.

when you choose opponents durring game setup can you name the enemy empires?

I don't know, I never tried that. But I am shure that can be done with the editor. CF did an awsome job in giving us easy accest to the editor while the game is being played and changing what we need. We don't even have to exit the game, it's all right there for us to get our hands on.

on that same note can you change the name of your empire mid game or are you stuck with the name for the duration of the game?

I don't know, I never tried. I always seem to use the same name all the time. My son asks me why I don't use my special name if I change it so I never bothered to use anything else. All you have to do is open the editor and try it and see what happens. I believe CF siad we can change alot of things with the editor. Again it's one of those save your game before you do it, and try it and mess around with the editor.

Next time I play, I will try it and see.

Ok, I tried it and yes you can. You can change your Empires name with the editor.

when you bring up one of the info screens, in the lower right is the name of the "thing" in a box, click on it, and you can type in a new name

(pick ship, or pick colony)

early on, I tend to name my ships for something they have done (Kaltor Killer, Slug Killer, change Home Planet to BloodRaven Home, same system, BloodRaven something, different system, based on the system)

Ok, I tried it and yes you can. You can change your Empires name with the editor.

You can also change it in the empire summary screen. (Your flag in the top, right under the message box, or F12.)

going to detail screens, when you got the name to the lower right, you can change it there

this is my Home World, so named it Home after the system

One thing to keep in mind, the change will not take effect until you exit the scree. So put in your name, then leave the screen and watch the name change on the main view.

just click on the name in the upper part of the screen, it will change with the screen open

Thanks all I got it working. I was looking in the wrong place. The big text box for some reson did not catch my eye.

For fleets, go to the Advanced Ship Actions (on the right) and it will allow you to rename Fleets (left pane, write icon). For Capital Ships, hover over the ship in the fleet menu and you can rename it by clicking on the write icon.
