Before 1.02 it was completely broken. Now it is mostly working. Soon it will hopefully be working totally correctly.

As in militarily? Or economically?
Economically you'll want to only build a few colonies with the most resources as possible on them. Give a little while for your private ships to develop them (Shouldn't be too long), and expand more. Except now you can expand more than the first time because those developed colonies now aid in the growth process. And so on and so forth. Unless you queue up 10 colonies at once from your one home colony, you'll do fine. Militarily, you'll have to work on manual fleet control, because the War AI is ridiculously bad (as of now, hopefully will be patched). Let most of your ships be automated for escort duty and such, and the ones in fleets under your sole command to deal with Pirates and Space Monsters, etc. The next patch will help them defend themselves, at least.
