Will High Tech Labs get me faster research for colony pods?

I want to discover the tech that will let me colonize desert planets. I may not even have this tech, but I want to pursue it. I don't want to crash it because am close to discovering other techs I want as well. I have a neutron star and already have a hi tech base there. I want to put another research base there or if I can't I spotted a Black Hole halfway across the galaxy. I want to put in a research base there but just for the class I want to get coloinzing techs.
I believe its habitation class or field I need. So what labs give research for habitation class or field? If I put one or 10 of them in a base, will it make a difference? I know if you put more than one medical lab you get no more benifit from it. Do you benifit by putting more than one lab on a base?
I was thinking of making a research ship with a few labs and not move so they can research it. By sending this ship to the desert planet I am imagining it is finding ways to tereform the planet for colonization. But what labs do I put on it? I know it's not weapons, and I am just guessing it's High Tech.
I want to make do I put in High Tech labs so I can have faster research in Habitation?

It's indeed HighTech labs you want for habitation and you can put as many labs as you can fit into a station and they'll add up their output.

Neutron Stars adds 200% research
Super Nova Stars adds 400% research
BlackHoles adds 600% research.
Those are fixed values.
Those values are boundable by the research cap.
This means that even thought a 600% research bonus seem like a lot, in practice what it does is make you economize some maintenance money on research stations. (the others you dont have to build)
You maximum empire research cap is affected by racial/government/ruins (maybe) research bonuses.
Its mainly based on your max population and development level I think, not sure how to calculate maximum research cap, but I know its affected by having more and better colonies with more people.
Now, to get the two most valuable "rush" techs Construction (bigger ship sizes and bases, wich means actual military superiority, in this game bigger IS better, because the concept of "perfect design" is present) and Habitations' colonial modules (allow you to grab other types of planets, the base of your power/income, thats why you need it)
What you want is focus Total Empire Research into Industrial for Construction and HighTech for Habitation. Even when you do that, the Industrial and HighTech research trees power will split into 4 routes each. You will still get what you want faster, but not at the fastest possible speed.
Thats why I recomend you crash construction early on if agressive universe, if not, crash habitation, for the early grab.
But thats not the best way, the best way is to find an alien race that have those specific techs and trade them theirs for your non important techs.
In my opinion, the best thing to do is find one of those Deep Space stars, and build research stations on them aiming to reach over your current empire research cap. Dont worry about the extra 1 or 2k worth of maintenance, you will soon increase your colonies/population and therefore increasing your research cap and when you do that, you dont have to worry about making more research stations. I wonder if the next patchs will alow players to retrofit research stations on Deep Space, if yes, then the first one you make, has just enough labs to reach the total empire research cap, if you cant, then add more, to prevent the hassle of updating to soon or forgetting how to do it, or having to do it, but not having enough construction ships available and other situational issues.

I will crash research after my torpedoes are avaliable. That is why I havn't done it yet. I might just need it, if someone decides to attack me, I need more fire power just in case.

Good that there are viable options towards the same results. I think Interesting's post fairly comprehensive; I do think the "acquire alien tech" almost an exploit. Yet that's how it's done.

An easier way is to pay pirates 5000 credits for the location of an independent colony, then grab it... rinse and repeat... now you are the biggest and richest in the galaxy and by the time you look at crashing research you already have the important bits anyways.

ok, i just started a new game... human, largest galaxy.
i started off with building 30 exploration ships (700 credits each)... i also bought the location of an independant colony from pirates... but only one. I didn't even get to it; 13 minutes into the game one of my explorers found a colony ship with creatures in stasis... Well, they could colonize ice planets. I had them colonize one, now I can build colonizers for ice planets from that species' planets. i am targetting other races for inclusion in the empire that lets me colonize other planet types... much more cost effective then crashing research.

I didn't know this could be done taltamir. I will consider doing this. Wow this makes the game even better, limiting on what you can colonize but give you the abilities do colonize other ways. Thank you for your suggestions.
I will try it next time. Right now I am starting a new game, and I am going to play it on how I think we would colonize planets and build empires in real life wich I thing will be slow, until I meet some races. So this game will be, and I will be trying to do research to colonize planets from what I can, until I meet the aliean races, and then I will keep your suggestions in mind.
Very good ideas.
