I tried to design and then build a lab base near a black hole, it didn't seem to even work (and had 0 fuel; could this be related?). Then I tried right click the black hole with the constructor and telling it to build, it flew into it and got destroyed ...

so... what do i need to do? I scrapped the lab base and my research actually went up.

You build it around the edge (not on it)
Don't worry if it lacks fuel, the Private Sector will eventually come over and refuel it, but the research still continues IIRC

far edge of what? as in touching the swirly animation? i built mine a little bit further out than that (it was in an all black region).

eh... i just design a super research station which has tons of all research kinds as well as being armed and i plonk one or two in a supernova... the supernova provides energy via collectors.

LOL Taltamir, that's pretty funny actually.  I don't know the exact range but it's longer than you think.   You don't need to be especially close to get the bonus.  If unsure, you can look for the AI who has built such a base and judge the distance from that though I have built even further away than the AI tends to do.

btw, with enough shields (of high enough tech) your base in the supernova will manage to recharge faster then shields drain, and sustain a fully charged shield... makes it extra lethal against anyone who dares attack it

To know the range, just Zoom in, then slowly zoom out.

Eventually you will see a graysh circle, thats the area of effect where you can build and get bonuses.

i dont see that with a black hole, sorry.

The reason I said to check out my AAR was because I have a screen showing exactly where you can build a base.

what is an AAR and where do i find it?
