Message Scrolling Not Working With Savegames?

Working with the official 1.03 patch. Whenever I start a new game, messages appear in the message scrollbar at top correctly. However, if I stop playing, then reload the saved game later on, messages no longer appear in the message scrollbar--only the popup messages on the right side appear. I checked the settings under Options, and all the options for messages to appear on the scrollbar were selected. This has happened to multiple savegames so far. Is this a display problem of some kind?
