Diplomacy screen, can someone explain?

I don't get the diplomacy screen. Can someone explain it to me please. What do the bars mean that are behind the races name? I thought reading the manual this is the trade between empires but when I click on different races the bar dosn't change. Is this a power indicator, to show how strong or how winning the empire is?

I read in the manual it says: Each row also shows total annual trade volume between the selected emprie and the empire corresponding to the row blah blah blah on page 56. Where is this? I thought it was the bar behind the empire name, but as I said when I click on different empires I don't see them changing. So where is this bar I should be looking for?

I just don't understand what the information the diplomacy screen is trying to tell me. Anyone explain it to me please.

AFAIK the trade volume is the number on the right hand side of the bar, the one followed by a k.
eg. 7k = 7 thousand of trade.
The actual coloured bar seems to be related to the races power in some way, but IDK whether this is population/strength/territory or some summery of everything.

How I believe it works is the number on the top right is what the leading civilization has. Hence the full bar. The other civilization are have lesser values, in comparision to the top civ, hence partial bars.

I always wundered what the OK was. So it's not OK but 0K or zero K. But I still don't get it, I have 2 green lines, so this should be the two races I had Free Trade Agreements with. One has 6 K (+20%) and the other has 0 K (+15%). I had FTA with them for a long time now. They are all in Green.

The other races also have numbers For example the Ketarov Federation always refuse a FTA with me, but I have an Annoyed and 14K in grey. So I can't see this as I am getting trade from someone who dosn't like me

Also the Abrigadu-Rai Territory are angry with me and have a 32K, they are in grey as well. So I can't see this money I am having trade with. Can you have trade money with someone you don't have a FTA with?

We are talking cross-purposes. The original post sound as if it was talking about the Racial Comparison screen. The Diplomatic screen - I believe the value is trade (total or per year?) and the percentage is somehow related to how good your relations are (any +number is good, negative bad) I would guess that total war would be -100% and Alliance would be +100%?

Ok, well.

The +% is ONLY if you have a free trade agreement. It goes up to +20%, which boosts the (x)K number, which is how much you're trading currently. A free trade agreement does not influence the trade of goods whatsoever.

Even if you have a free trade agreement, it does not mean you WILL trade with that race, or even take a preference. If it is closer and more easily accessible from another empire, then your ships will buy from them, not from your farther empire with the FTA.

The  transparent bars (inside a race's name) are a measure of their strategic value. This is done proportionally. Meaning if you have 500 and they have 200, your bar will be the biggest one, and theirs will be smaller. Now say it's later in the game and you have 50000 and they have 20000. The bars will still be in the same size ratio to each other.

The smaller, more solid bars below each race's name when you click on them in the diplo screen is the diplomatic status bar. This will be green, white, etc. depending on what arrangement you have with them (if any). Look at the legend at the right of the menu if you need more help.

Strategic value is a measure of an empire's military strength, population, technology, and many other unknown factors compiled into one number to give an approximate value to their empire.

Does that help?

so just to be clear the number is the number of money you're getting from trading AND a FTA will increase this money by x%?

Thanks OberonDark, yes that does help. Thank you. So you can have a FTA with someone who likes you alot and not get trade from them, but someone who hates you, and don't have a FTA but you can trade with them. Weird. Why travel futher than you have to eh?

I think so. That's the way it looks to me anyway, as there's no sudden difference in the X number when I have an FTA or no FTA.

Acording to the galactopedia.

Free trade gives up to 10% extra on your existing trade.
Mutual Defense Pact and Protectorate gives up to 15% extra.

I get the impression the percentage rises over time till it reaches the cap.

I'm quite sure I've seen 20% on FTA, and no extra on Mutual. I'll check that out sometime.
