Had one empire(AI) go into civilwar. What is the side effects allied with them including trade. Also is it possible for the real human players empire to go into civilwar?

Yes. Constantly. Just wait until you see how annoying that "Incite Revolution" spy mission is. However, there needs to be a free empire slot. An empire cannot split if 20 empires are already active.

This is not true.

Best thing would be if Elliot saw this and could give a clear technical answer.
Here you go: the maximum limit on number of standard empires in the game is 50. You'll never see more than 50 standard empires in the game, in fact you're unlikely to even get close to that number. This does NOT include pirate factions (of which there can be dozens) or independent alien colonies.

The maximum number of *starting* empires in the game is 20, including your own. You can have as many empires with the same dominant race as you like, e.g. 20 empires that are all human.

The maximum hard-coded number of alien races is 20. All standard empires, pirate factions and independent alien colonies are one of these 20 alien races.

How about a friendly warning when your empire is in danger of revolting into a Civil War...

I've had two games ruined by unexpected Civil Wars...both times the pop-up indicated the Civil War was due to massive unrest, yet I did not observe any indication of "massive unrest" prior to the Civil War event.  There needs to be a warning that there is unrest of  the level that can split your empire in two!  These things don't happen overnight...
