I just had the same problem, and a reinstall did fix it. But then it happened several months (and four invasions) later when I destroyed an enemy gas mining station.

I'm getting the same thing.  Game hangs and doesn't respond.  Ran into it for first time with 1.04.4.  Did a clean install and updated to 1.04.4.  Everything fine for a while then ran into it again.  When it happens if I click a button screen turns opaque and windows msg comes up saying application not responding w/ option to wait or quit application.  Here is the even log info for what its worth.

The program DistantWorlds.exe version 1.0.4.4 stopped interacting with Windows and was closed. To see if more information about the problem is available, check the problem history in the Action Center control panel.  Process ID: fbc  Start Time: 01cae805a3146ac1  Termination Time: 94  Application Path: D:\Matrix Games\Distant Worlds\DistantWorlds.exe  Report Id: 5623203e-541c-11df-89c3-001d72c8629c

I know this may sound stupid but you might want to try this out. Load your game that keeps on freezing go into options find Attacks against enemies and set it to control manually and then attack an planet and see if it freezes. This is what I did in my game and the freezing went away. So I'm thinking it maybe some kind of combat advice bug.
