Yesterday, December 7th, 2754, a date which will live in infamy, the Blind Sniperians were suddenly and deliberately attacked by space naval forces of Pirates...

I bought this game yesterday and at the moment I just can say that Pirates are very annoying...
Now I need to read some AAR's to understand how to play it.

Anyhow DW looks good, my congrats [:)]

Pirates are there to give you soemthing to do while you build up your evil fleet of conquest...

Also, they are very useful for information on independant colonies and ruins.

You are right, I'm starting to appreciate them [:'(]
Anyhow if you begin the game near a Pirates base you have to pay for protection or your mining stations are in danger.

I have tryed to build my first ship...very nice tool [:)]

I just play Boskara! If I am lucky to get a good dilithium supply, I put Firestorm on all my bases. Total pirate immunity! In my current game my home system started with 3 ocean planets/moons with dilithium. That makes Boskara unstoppable.

At the moment I have just played with Human (Repubblic) and Sulken (Hive Mind), they were test games to understand how it works.
Now is the time for my first "serious" game.

A lot of fun playing it [:)]

Boardgame: Advanced Squad Leader (ASL), Operational Combat Series (OCS), La Bataille Series (Clash of Arms), 1914 Twilight in the East (TitE)

Pcgame: War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition, Distant Worlds

ASL! cool. I had and played Squad Leader all the way back to its beginnings. Panzer Blitz and Panzer Leader before SL was created. I even won an ASL tournement at a West Point wargaming convention one year.

Now all my gaming is online. RL too tight to make any regular meetings with friends to play any boardgames.

ASL is the best game that I ever played, its learning curve is a cliff curve [:D]

Sorry to hear this, of course RL is more important but I always try to find some time for a good face to face match: wargames, dice, good opponents and beers, that means a lot of fun [:)]
Now all my gaming is online.

You can play ASL online too (by PBeM as well).
If you are interested how to do it drop me a PM.

Be sure to arm your mining stations, and get shields on up on them. If you are particularly evil (like me) put a hyperdeny and a LR scanner on them as well...pirates come in, they don't get to leave.

Uhm...in the next game that I will play, at the beginning I'd like to keep all my maintenance costs rather low, I thought to build some Escort ships for patrol duty and just add some shields to my mining stations, maybe armor, it should give me the necessary reaction time...
A Destroyers fleet will smash up all Pirates bases that it will find. (Pirates setting: few)

Honestly, it is probably cheaper to arm the stations. I generally go with 4-5 shields and 6 lasers/torpedos. That is more than enough to handle your typical pirate raider, and you don't need as many ships darting about the map.

I think so, I will try both ways in two different galxy sectors.
One more question, why no armor protection?

Shields are a lot more efficient in pts/size of component than armor and shields regenerate. Plus, if something has chewed through all your shields, some armor is only going to slow them for a brief moment. Its a lot more beneficial to add another shield than 10-20 armor (or however many) because that extra shield bumps up your regen rate as well as adding more pts.

Armor is for critters - Kaltors, Grubs, etc, because they ignore shielding and only armor can defend against their attacks.

Thanks, this help me how to build my ships.
Therefore few armor component just to raise the chance to escape and for Explorer ships.

Very few for explorers either - I find its better just to make sure they have the best proximity scanner and a lot of engines! Heh. If they have very fast they can easily escape creatures/whatever.

Granted I'm different there too, I arm my explorers with as much firepower as I put on a frigate. Then the Kaltors just die. [:D]
