Arty direct support only

Quote p62 of the manual: “……so that units capable of bombarding will only fire in support of units with the same order”

Note: “…..with the same order.”

Case 1

Three battalions are operating adjacent to each other.

213 battalion has a Probe order and has no mortar or artillery attached
214 battalion has an Attack order and has no mortar or artillery attached
215 battalion has an Attack order and has mortars attached. “The arty direct support only” box is checked.

Because the “arty direct support only” box is checked, the mortars will support 214 battalion and 215 battalion but will not support 213 battalion because it has a different Order.

Is that correct?

Case 2

213 battalion has a Defend order and has no mortar or artillery attached
214 battalion has a Probe order and has no mortar or artillery attached
215 battalion has a Probe order and has no mortar or artillery attached

The regimental HQ has artillery attached. The regimental HQ is given the Defend order “The arty direct support only” box is checked.

In this case the artillery will support 213 battalion because it has a Defend order but will not support 214 or 215 battalion because they do not have defend orders.

Is that correct?

I think it means the arty will only support units executing the same mission. So your mortar in 'direct support only' will only support the attack which it is directly participating, not just any attack.

*had an artillery question posted here, but realized it might have hijacked the thread. Will start a new thread with the question*

Can I get more guidance on this issue? Specifically Case 2 above. For example:

How do I ensure the provides support to the battalions with the probe order and none to the defending unit or;

How do I ensure the arty provides support to the defending unit and none to the units with the probe order?

Unless I misunderstood the manual, attaching an artillery unit to a HQ and checking the "direct support only" button means that it will support that unit (and its sub-units) only.

My understanding of the rules are:

Case 1: Mortars attached to 215 will only support 215. The wording 'same order' means 215's Attack order only; not other Attack orders.

Case 2: As each Bn has a different order from the Reg HQ I assume they are not part of the Reg Force. Therefore they will not be supported by the Reg HQ's artillery.

I think in case 2 the regimental artillery will support the battalions, as they are sub-units of the regiment.

I think in case 2 the regimental artillery will support the battalions, as they are sub-units of the regiment.

I think that's only if they're still attached to Regt HQ along with the artillery. In that case, the 'direct support only' check box being active means the arty should support the Regt HQ's mission only. Detached bn's are detached, so they are not 'directly supported'.

FWIW, I hardly ever check that box, unless I'm making an attack, or unless it's a situation where there's only one truly critical location on the map (which is rare). Even then, I usually just keep mortars/IGs under Bn control and consolidate the larger tubes into brigade-sized ARKOs. I'll leave them usually to let the AI control, except when I have particular targets I want hit. If that's the case, then I'll really want to hit it, hence the grouping of arty bns into groups of 3-4 similarly-ranged units (36-48 tubes).

Oh, yeah, I misread the case. I missed the fact the regimental artillery had the direct support checkbox ticked. Ignore me! :)
