Regimental and Divisional Artillery Question

I have some questions about how Regimental and Division level artillery work.

If I have a Battalion on order to attack, will the Regimental and/or Divisional level artillery support that attack? Even though they were not 'grouped' with the Battalion in the attack order?

Usually I take direct control of Regimental and Divisional artillery assets. I've noticed that when I do this these artillery assets never fire on their own, only when I give them direct command. Is there a way to set them so that I CAN give them bombard orders when I like, but if I'm not paying attention to them they might fire on their own in support of a combat I'm not seeing?

Thanks!

On the Options tab, don't check "Rest After Bombard", and artillery you gave orders to will provide GS (General Support), independently firing missions requested by the AI.

If you left them under an HQ's command, and that command does not specify "Direct Support Only", then they will be available for GS fires as well.

The AI tries to work out if the calls for fire make sense to pass up the chain.  Not every contact results in a rain of shells.  [:)]

Yeah I noticed that high level arty gets called less when left alone.  The AI maybe does not bother to beg his superios for support.
