Help me choose a game to play

So if there's a guide somewhere that helps with this, or a web site to go to, I didn't see it linked around. Basically I would like some advice to find a game that I will enjoy. I hope this is the right place to ask.
What I'm looking for:
I like World War 2 time period; I want something that's at least the scope of one theater, preferably global scoped. I like sea and air combat better than ground combat, but I'm willing to put up with all three as long as the air and sea sections make for interesting strategy.
Preferably I would be able to control or at least direct the nature of reinforcements, like mix of CVs vs BBs vs. DDs, etc.
Preferably I could play multiplayer, Hot seat, PBeM or live with friends, but a strong single player is needed too. If multi-player is an option, I would like a game where I can find opponents willing to play someone new.
Background: (It's at the end in case you aren't interested, just skip..

)
I played all three Hearts of Iron games, but find them somewhat... unsatisfactory. I never feel like I have enough control over the game, or that I can figure out why certain things happen.
I played tabletop counter-based war-games in college. My favorite game by far is
Luftwaffe.
Thanks in advance for any responses!

Witp:AE might be a good buy for you, although if you want to have some influence on your building program, you'll have to play the Japanese.

I think you and WitP:AE might just get along. [:D]

WitP:AE should satisfy all your needs about control. Don't look further, there is no game which comes even close in terms of depth and detail.

Since you mention Luftwaffe, you might want to look at Defending the Reich

Yes, definitely. But you'll probably be able to play SOTP and WitP:AE all the way through before WiF goes gold. [:'(]

I second the suggestion of HPS´s Midway.
However, if the scenario of Defending the Reich appeals to you, you´re probably better off getting Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich.
Supremacy at Sea should also be worth a look:

Considering that development time is now part of the factors of pricing,.....you dont want to even know what WiF is going to cost considering it has been in development for a few years now and seems as if its going to be in development for another few years. It may even beat Duke Nukem in the amount of years its talked about but never seen by the time its all over.

I've pointed out that we could have actually fought WW2 in the time since Matrix took over its development [;)]. That said, Steve is doing a heroic job. I've only been waiting since 1998 or so. I look forward to playing it on my 17 Teraflop quantum computer. [:'(]

Why did I receive an email notification of this thread from 2010? 16 years later?

There was an AI posting in it. I reported it, and an admin deleted it.
