OK

I'm going to get myself a Father's day game...I'm a really old gamer..64..yucko..

anyway if it's available download a nd physical i only want the physical if it includes a real manual....Otherwise just the download.....

I'm really new to any turned based strategy type game outside of the civ series.....Hex based ok but i'm not the greatest at fast learning so a game that isn't too hard to learn..My number one priority is the ability to get me immersed in the game for long play sessions..

kind of lousy computer..intel.2.66 ghz..1gb of ram..winXP...nvidia 6200 pci only.....

I thought of distant worlds but no demo to see if it will run...any part of history will work ok too.

Tried one called AI war but part pof the tutorial seemed not to work right for me at leat...any suggestions?

A turn based wargame similiar to Civ is Empires of Steel. Its much more combat oriented than Civ is.

John Tiller's Campaign Series is a good hex, turn based game that falls into the easy to play, but hard to master category.  I don't think you'd have any problem running that on an older system.  It is all tactical combat no building, tech research or resource gathering.  If you want space civ game, you could look at Space Empires IV deluxe.  It also should cause you no issues on an older system.  Or you could go with Chariots of War or Spartan, which are like civilization but set in the ancient world.  Those also would have no issue with an older system.

I agree. Commander - Europe at War Gold is a great deal like Panzer General, the game that many credit as saving the PC wargaming genre. It is easy to learn and fun to play.

Happy belated Father's Day. Mine was great for a change.

First of all, your PC is fine for say at least 90% of the games you're going to encounter here. the only change i'd make to my pc if I were you, get two GB of RAM installed on PC. I've been in IT for over 15 years and XP needs 2 GB of RAM to 'breathe' right. XP should load faster and memory is the best bang for your buck upgrade you can do on a pc.

Were it me starting all over again in wargaming, I'd start with something that simulates the way the games where played when they were created on paper and cardboard: something hex based.

I've always been a BIG fan of Steel Panthers: World at War, aka SPWaW. Great thing about SPWaW is, it's FREE.

Stay in touch and hopefully we'll meet on the computer battle ground someday.

Regards,

I'll third that recommendation. Great game in which to get your feet wet without a steep learning curve.
