Questions about Best

Just finished the battle at the Best bridge. Of course Axis blew the bridge before I could get to it. However, after the Axis blew the bridge it now says "Total Allied" victory. Does that mean the Germans vacated the area and moved somewhere else or what happened to the BG that was fighting against me. It had two 88s and would have been a tough opponent if it had remained. Second question, can I rebuild the bridge or build a pontoon bridge on the map as was done in the movie? [:D]

When the German blow a bridge they give up the area, but it delays the allies. Ive been playing as the Germans and once I had to blow a bridge and the battle immediately ended. I hope this helps.

The bridge rebuilding begins automatically. You'll see a change in the strategic icons for bridges indicating that it's being worked on. Once it's done it's strategic icon changes back to it's operational state but when you play that map again the bridge will be a bailey bridge repair over top of the existing destroyed section.

If you were fighting a German BO BG and the Bridge gets blown then the BO BG gets disbanded and does not return. The security troops just took off....

If you were fighting a German regular BG and the Bridge gets blown then the BG will retreat to an adjacent map if possible or gets disbanded and does not return.

If is a regular German BG moves onto the same map as a BO BG the BO BG is dissolved and its guns/troops/vehicles/etc. become part of the regular BG's forcepool.

Once a map is totally Allied control rebuilding will start automatically. The number of turns depends on the size of the bridge blown.

That is cool! [&o] How long (how many strategic turns) does it take to build a new bridge?

From the manual (pg. 66):

Code: Select all

If the Allies have a clear supply line to a major supply depot, Allied engineers will automatically
start to repair the bridge. Minor bridges take 2-3 turns to repair, and major bridges about 6
turns. Repairs proceed as long as the supply line is open and the Allies control all of the bridge
VLs. If the Germans are able to take control of any bridge VLs they can destroy the repair work
and force to Allies to start over (after they recapture all the VLs).

Thanks Plodder. In my current GC it's afternoon of the 19th. XXX corps is held up at Nijmegen bridge waiting for the bridge to be repaired. Everything south of that point is clear of resistance and I've been able to fend of the counter-attacks... so far. Frost holding out in Arnhem although the AI has been aggressively sending 2 battlegroups in from the east and south every single turn. History repeats itself I guess. :)

Is Nijmegen Bridge wired to blow?

In my campaign it never was....captured it intact after three combat phases, but did not gain control of the bridge during the first battle using 30-minute time.

Hi Juggalo,

If you notice, on the the strategic map, you'll see the icons indicating bridges that have a big, bright red rectangle with a black "T" on top.  My guess is that is a plunger for explosives.  That means the bridge has explosives.

When I started the GC I noticed that Nijmegen did not have the "plunger" icon.  I pulled my US airborne troops from Wyler, on the east part of the map, to take Nijmegen.  I took the road bridge and held it (briefly).  I then had to fall back to Wyler because my guys were getting overpowered and their supplies were cut off.  After falling back and letting the Germans have the bridge back, there is now the "plunger" icon. :-(
Bummer.

So, in short, no...not at first.

I'd have to check as I don't recall specific discussion about it but I think the Germans don't have the capability to destroy Nijmegen bridge until after a certain date. So as Captmatt says you won't see it at first. I had about 4 or 5 turns but not enough troops to take the main VL(center VL) of the bridge so it got blown up in my face.

Some bridges start prepared for demolition and some do not. The Nijmegen bridge is not initial prepared for demolition.  As Captmatt points out, you can see the bridge status icons on the strategic map.

The Germans can prime a bridge for demolition if they get a battle group onto the bridge map and they control the bridge Victory Locations.  Static troops (represented by the oval unit icon on the strategic map) can't prime a bridge on their own.
