Yes. But maybe you will need to use compatibillity mode (XP SP3). For the latter.. If there will be a TOAW4 it might work in Windows 8...[:D]

But apparently 3.4 won't work in Win98. Does anybody know can I add XP or 7 to 98, or is a new machine required?

Depends on your machine specifications. If it's not too weak XP should just do fine. What are your specs.?

Just..your question doesn't seem to be too clear to me.. what do you mean with "add"? Dual boot Win98 and XP? This works. Did that once.

I ain't so good with computers, but I think that is what I was thinking - adding an XP partition to the 98 machine.

Specs ?? Not sure where the easy button is that shows this stuff - it might be a Pentium 4, x86, with 511 mb ram. That's all I can find without assistance. [8|]

From the specifications aspect xp should do well on your PC. You might want to turn off some of XP's graphical stuff (use classic theme, no animations for popping up windows, no mouse shadow, no window/menu shadow etc)

For the installation you will need to create a second partition on your harddisk. From your question i guess you only have one partition, right? You can create a second partition but i don't know if this is possible from within Win98. There's free software out there that can do this or you could do this from within the win xp setup It's been a long time since i did this, i don't recall exactly how i did it. But it worked perfectly.[8D]

The best would be you do a google search on that topic "Win98 xp dual boot" or sth like this. There's a plenty of descriptions, procedures and tipps out there. Before i'll lead you to a technical disaster..

In each case do a backup of your system before you start.

Note that XP normally uses 'ntfs' as a filesystem while Win98 uses FAT32. XP can also be set to install using FAT32. Why do i attempt to confuse you with this [:D] ? Because Win98 can't read ntfs formatted partitions, so if you want to access your 'XP files' from within Win98 you will need to install XP using the FAT32 filesystem.

It does sound like a nice headache to get involved in, but cheaper than buying a new 'puter. One way its money, the other way its aggravation. Thanks for the info !!

Tried the XP compatability route, but at the moment it will not install, as is says it is not a Windows 32 program. [&:][:)]

It can be done. I installed it on my Windows 7 laptop. I vaguely remember some sort of odd message but I'm not in front of that laptop right now. I can uninstall it and reinstall it when I get back to it and I'll let you know.

Good idea! Running as Administrator was something I thought of after posting.

I was playing a demo of "For the Glory" but could not get it to change video options. The Program Files directory is Read-Only so you can't change anything like settings files unless you run the program as administrator. I really like Windows 7 but just like the switch to XP it takes a little getting used to. [:)]

To get around the Program Files read only problem, just create a new dir under C: and install all games there. Mine is called Alt Program Files.

I only got a message saying "could not find required operating system" listing windows OS prior to Vista. Then "do you want to continue?" And it installed and runs.

My TOAW installer version is "OperationalArtofWarIII-SetupRelease-DR-v322927.exe"

Thanks for all the suggestions, I was having several problems during the install on a new laptop and I was fixated on Windows 7 being the problem. I finally realised that the setup release file was corrupted and when I used a copy from another archive it worked OK. I am so glad that I have kept several copies of this old favourite. Thanks again. [:)]

good to hear. Now I'm going to have to make more copies of my installers just in case. And install gamea in a seperate game folder from now on (thanks Menschenfresser)

I have back-up copies on different computers and on separate portable hard drives, with a saved file of all the installation number keys (with a printed copy just in case) and don't forget copies of all your favourite mods. You won't appreciate it until something goes bang ! Had a great Napoleonic game on my old Atari ST, didn't do a back-up floppy, game disk got corrupted in the drive, game gone, never again [:)]

For sure it won't work on my Win98 machine. Ralph did make a heroic effort to get it to work, but he's now using a graphic application, GDIPLUS.DLL, that he just couldn't make to work on Win98. Apparently XP or later is even required just to download it. Maybe it can be resolved in the next update.

We are releasing the aborted 3.3 update along with the 3.4 one. 3.3 has only a few of the features of 3.4 (see the What's New), but at least it works with Win98.

Sure - but this unofficial Win98 update (from the link of my previous post) is specificially made to work with the incooperated version of GDIplus. And surely newer versions of this .dll won't work in Win98 even with this update.

However I don't know which version of GDIplus.dll is required for the 3.4 patch. On my Win7 machine i have version 5.2.7600

Well, i'll try on a virtual machine once 3.4 is out and let sPzAbt653 know.
(Apart from the fact that his machine can easily run a Winxp...)
