Ship Repairs

Because I am stupid, I haven't figured out when/how ship repairs occur. I (stupidly) got the Astoria shot up pretty bad (71 Flot damage) while (stupidly) bombarding Lunga on the 2nd day of the #17 campaign scenario. I returned it to Louganville, but it's been there awhile and no progress. Any help?

Leave her there. Luganville is too small to effect quick repairs, but at 71 flotation, she may not make it to Noumea.

In general, the larger the port, the faster the repairs for flotation and fire. System damage is another thing entirely. It can take anywhere from a week to 3 months to reduce 10 points of system damage in an on-map port, so you're better off sending the ship in question back to Pearl/Tokyo if the damage is over 15-25%, unless, of course, the ship is urgently needed. :)

What size port is Luganville in your game? You'll want at least a size 3, then disband the Astoria (put her in port) or at the very least make sure she's docked.

Once the flotation damage is down a ways (20 or less), send her to Noumea. From there, once the flotation damage is completely gone, send her back to Pearl if you're playing a long scenario. Otherwise keep her anchored in Noumea.

Erik,
I have posted acouple of times in different threads about Cairns being a good repair port eventhough Brisbane is 9 and Cairns 6. I have seen a couple of other people mention Cairns in this respect any idea why this occurs? Is it just the luck of the draw??

Cairns...

Burch,

As far as I know, Cairns shouldn't be better overall than Brisbane. The ports in theater give each ship a chance to repair based on port size. However, it's a random chance that you may or may not succeed in. Your results at Cairns should be written off to luck... the right parts arrived there but not yet at Brisbane. Also, larger ships take longer to repair than smaller ones - did you have larger ships at Brisbane?

The off-map ports like Pearl don't have a random chance. They have a guaranteed repair rate that's quite good and they'll start working on the ship as soon as it arrives. However, transit time can sometime make this a tough decision for less damaged ships.

Regards,

- Erik

Thanks Erik.

I did have 2 CA's with similar sys damage at each port in one case. In that case Cairns seemed to repair the CA there about 1.5 times faster than Brisbane.
Currently I have CV's based there (Cairns) and they seem to be repairing faster than the CV's at Noumea as well.
Might it be that Cairns in most instances has fewer total ships in port?

Yeah, does that make a difference? Are the larger ports (usually with many more ships to repair) swamped with work and can only repair so many or does that make a difference?:)

Huh, another thread asking for some explanations on repair. Guess I'm not the only one that would like some details fleshed out for this subject.

And the role "docked" (as a TF) has versus "anchored" (disbanded) has for repair as well! This one drives me nuts trying to figure out what is best for repair.

According to the manual (and some threads), repair speed is quicker for "anchored" (disbanded) ships than for "docked" ships

Thanks Spooky. I saw where that was implied in the manual but wasn't convinced that is what it was really saying. Seems like it should be just the opposite but I am no naval expert.

What they mean by "docked" is that the ship is kept in a ready state to go to sea. The boilers are hot and the ship is capable of immediately (relatively) being able to cast off and maneuver.

To be "anchored" means that you could be at a dock or anchorage, but your boilers would be cold. Since you aren't prepared to go to sea at all times, you would allow yourself to be hemmed in with repair equipment, access hatches opened to facilitate repairs, etc. Thus, if an attack strikes the port, the time required to get up steam and clear all encumbrances so that the ship could sortie would be up to several hours (depending on the size of the ship).

So, to be docked will restrict the repair crews in many aspects of their work. To be anchored improved the repair crews access, but restricted the reactions of the ship.

OK Rowlf. That helps. I bet the term "docked" trips up a few folks without sea legs like me. Guess I'll have to disband a few of my repairs now....
