sub damage

has anyone else noticed how subs pick up routine damage so easily. i send them on patrols then make them computer control, but after a week or so they retrun to base cos of damage. i understand that big ships would take longer to repair but surely it shouldnt be taking 1-2 weeks to get routine damage from 15 to below ten
this is really annoying

in my game, it has taken over two weeks for my 2 CV's to go from 16 to 15 (gotten bullheaded, said I was gonna keep em in port till they got to under 10, maybe longer then I was hopeing for)(at least it is not like they got any targets to fight, the IJN is all but gone)

this is really annoying
I do control them myself and the damage is ok. Maybe the computer moves them around too much? I also noticed that, while a sub is easily sunk, if it survives, it can usually make it home despite quite some floating damage.

Hope you are right, one of mine has taken 88% in a PBEM game, it is one of the real big ones, would be a pity to loose.

Now, of course, 88% is *really* very much. On the other hand, 88 is a "lucky number", so who knows. :)

i really think the sub damage level rises to fast and drops to quick. any chance of it being tweaked

in WW2 subs would patrol for 4-6 weeks without having to return home due to damage (unless they were attacked and there are always exceptions). in the game when i set subs to computer control it sends them home when damage gets over 10. this means i have to move them manually (moving 10 subs every turn is a real pain in the ***) or have no subs on patrol for weeks on end.
i can understand wear and tear happenin to and subs on patrol but it shouldnt take weeks to repair minor damage
please fix it

I seem to recall in Richard O'Kane's book about his experiences as CO of USS Tang, that Tang didn't need anything other than minor repairs after every patrol. In fact if I recall correctly Tang would just head to Midway to refuel, resupply, and then right back out to patrol. Only heading to Pearl every second patrol or so. Of course she only survived 5 patrols, but it was enough to make her one of the highest scoring boats of the war.

This damage requires that ships stay in port and receive routine overhauls etc and is realistic. Subs historically went on patrol and once home, a relief crew would take over and go over the boat, essentially overhauling it while the patrol crew got laid (pissing off many an Aussie soldier), ate fresh fruit, and drank Swan Lager for about 14 days. Only rarely did subs just reload torps and go out again, and this was in '44/45 when distance to patrol areas was small and tenders were placed in very advanced bases.

S-Boats should probably have a much higher system damage potential than fleet boats as they were mechanical nightmares. USN fleet boats fitted with H.O.R. diesels should also have higher potential for sys damage. These diesels were called wHORes by their engineering departments, and were later replaced by FairbanksMorse or Winton diesels later in the war.:)

My only beef with subs is that they are not restricted to patrol areas as in real life (at least with regards to US doctrine) to minimize any chance a sub would be sunk by friendly fire and their success rate is waaaay to high. ASW is not existant right now as well so perhaps many of these issues will be addressed together in a future update and won't be in WITP. Releasing UV on its own is turning out to be a great way to improve WITP in develop stage,
