A recent question in the tech support forum led me to realize that there are duplicate entries in the devices tab for a lot of weapons (looking at scenario 1). Why is that? Seems redundant and leads to confusion. Also why not free up some slots for other uses? Just wondering

They're not duplicates. Look at the build rates and pools, and then consider again why the different nations use different copies of the same device.

Well that may or may not be true. Attached image shows two entries for the two Mousetrap devices. A recent issue I brought up has to do with these entries. As far as I have been able to tell so far, there is no ship class that points at the 100 series entries only the 1700 series.

quite a few others that I have found as well.  My guess is that there was the original list and then as AE expanded upon witp they moved some of them to be able to group them appropriately, kept the originals in place to prevent any opens, and then decided not to remove them at the end due to time/effort.
 
you have to be so bloody careful removing any, else you get an open slot ...
 
PS: some have slightly different names, but are the same weapon: 3in/60 = 80mm/60.

That's true enough; the early part of the list IS the stock devices, but there are many duplicates throughout the AE list of devices, for the reason I gave above.
