Ok, here's another older geezer: John Paul Jones, formerly of Led Zeppelin. His two solo CDs, "Zooma" and "The Thunderthief" showcase him on a number of different keyboards and stringed instruments, plus his ability as an orchestral arranger. He was easily the most talented (and under-rated) member of Led Zep.

Tommy Shannon, from SRV and Double Trouble and before that Johnny Winter. Not flashy, just solid

Victor Wooten, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Check out this guys website and check out the lessons section, especially Lesson 7 called Classic Thump.

...or overall musical contribution? That was why I voted for JP Jones. Technically he's outstanding, but overall as a musician he shows the whole picture. The same can be said for Paul McCartney, who, IMHO, is a great melodic bassist (the inspiration for Chris Squire, maybe?), a decent guitarist, keyboard player AND noted singer/songwriter.

That lead line on "Taxman" ? He played it. I would also add Geddy Lee of Rush in the multi-instrumental/singer/songwriter category. Sting, also. Frankly, the tech wizards like Billy Sheehan and Stanley Clarke and Jaco Pastorius, while they they amaze me with their technical prowess, don't move me the same way these other guys do. I tried to attach an MP3 file here, but Matrix' server won't allow it. d amn

We musn't forget Jack Casady.

Props to JPJ and Entwhistle.

Jannick Top of Magma. Very powerful.

Flea and Les Claypool from more recent times.

Victor Wooten from Bela Fleck's band.

...but the Don Corleone of all bassdom simply has to be....

I'd have to say Billy Sheehan. I saw him live with Mr. big, and he blew me away. I also like Steve Harris of Iron Maiden. Might not of been the best, but solid, and has very good stage presence. Gotta have good stage presence.

Take Flea for an example. Very good Bass player. But when you watch the guy, he acts like a circus idiot. Way too goofy. Also he wastes his talents with the "Peppers". Most of thier music sucks imo. I think we played one tune from them along time ago. It was "Take me to your backwoods" or something like that.

I also like Johnny Lee Middleton of Savatage.

I don't think there's a generational conflict - I'm 36! And Joy Division were a band active from 1977-1980, so hardly something new. Just a bit out of the mainstream and the charts, that's all.

I will concede that I've always admired McCartney's bass skills, though, especially as the guy could sing whilst playing very complex lines...cool indeed. [Oops! - there goes my punk credibility!].

I always thought Graham Maby was fantastic. He played with Joe Jackson and did a lot of studio work. Last time I saw him was with The Silos (or was it Walter Salas-Humera after the Silos disolved?).

Jack Cassady from Hot Tuna was also a joy to see and hear.

And someone already mentioned Bootsy Collins - bring on the funk!

What about Johnny Thunders? Or Sid Vicious? Or Dee Dee Ramone? Granted, not a lot of refined technique, but I love those bands and those songs.
