If assigned manually, is it possible to assign more than 3 regiments to a division? Doing some research it appears that the cavalry retained the square configuration instead of reverting to the triangle formation.

1st US Cavalry Divison (Special) consisted of 2 Cavalry Brigades, each of 2 Cavalry Regiments at a smaller TOE than an Infantry Rgt.
1st Cavalry Bde of 5 & 12 Cavalry Rgts &
2nd Cavalry Bde of 7 & 8 Cavalry Rgts

In AE, you could allocate either the 4 Regiments or 2 Brigades to the Div HQ as long as the numbers of the sub units isnt greater than the TOE of the Div.

Yes, you can. But if you combine the 4 regiments into a division, then divide it again, it will split into three parts (Div/A, Div/B, Div/C).
