Fog of War

I really am starting to hate to post on this forum, the reason being is that most of you that read the posts have nothing to say so I assume that everything is honkey dorey[old saying] with you people or you all play pbem and have no problems. Have a question about FOW, I use the 3 hex FOW and I should not be able to see Japanese fleets around the Pacific at least not all of the Pacific, I understand coast watchers and all that but I see a fleet in Wake Island waters and that should be a nono, unless a coast watcher is hiding up in the only palm tree on that god forsaken island. And I am also getting the feeling that Wastelands has washed their hands on this game and are moving on to bigger and better things if I am wrong please let me no!

FoW is not directly connected to the Sea Zones.

The naval activity informations are coming from a way more different sources. Subs, merchants, recon planes, radio, etc. Of course a lot of those information is false or not confirmed.
So even if you are seeing an enemy in a sea zone, you are not sure what exactly is there.

Of course I'm reading this forum and very often I can gather much more information and feedback, only by reading other forumees conversation than trough participating in it.

Well I would appreciate it it if you participated more in the forums, you are IMHO very knowledgable and concerned with a goood game, you try to correct things and are pretty good at appeasment, but I doubt there are merchant ships reporting positions,[they would not last long and would not put themselves in that kind of danger] I have no recon planes anywhere but the USA because I lost Hawaii, none of my submarines are out of dock, so that does not hold water for me maybe someone else. Doomtrader think about this the very essence of a sudden attack by a powerful fleet that looms out of the mist[melodramatic right] I can see where the Jap carriers are all over the map and plan my moves based on where they are at. WRONG
Should not be that way, needs correction that is if Wastelands is even interested in this game anymore. Not being mean nasty or anything like that just want to see a good game get better. Not according to Bo but according to common sense.

Bo,

I disagree regarding the naval FOW. It does imo give a reasonably realistic representation. There are sea zones where due to the scarcity of land it is of course less realistic.

This sort of information was gathered often by units not represented in the game (coast watchers, radio intercepts, convoy escorts etc)

regards

It looks like we are the only two posters on this forum[;)] what I was trying to get across is if we didnt know where every fleet was we would have to play a little more careful not to get ambushed, there are many instances in the Pacific war where there were great suprises for both sides. Pearl Harbor was the first, as you know the Japanese would have called it off if any sailing ship of any kind spotted them, second Midway had the Japs known there was American carriers in the vicinity they would have reacted differently and of course the terrible mistake in the Phillipine sea that could have destroyed part of the American invasion fleet attacking the Phillipines, none of these fleets were seen by each other, the way it is now I can move around with impunity because I know where the enemy fleets are, your point is well taken and correct just trying to add a little flair to this game.

I believe the manual covered this a little bit and it has been discussed beforehand but here she is:

30% base chance to spot a naval unit at sea. Then add another percentage on top of that foe each type of ship.

For Example a carrier is 50%, 50 +30 = 80% chance to spot. Now add the Comanders chance.

I agree it is too easy to spot.

The Rising Sun has reduced this alot. It's like a chess game where your always guessing where opponent is going to move, except Alot of time you can not see or find the units in the sea zones..

Thank you Razz, it makes sense to do it that way, but early on in the vanilla game[dont have Rising Sun yet,] I was careless moving my carriers and out of nowhere I got hit with most of the Japanese fleet including 18 carriers, do I need to talk about the slaughter, whew! Thank god for the famous delete button[;)] Turned of off the game and started over[:D] looking forward for your mod any idea when?

Battleships are 20+30 = 50%
Cruisers are 25+30 = 55%
Submarines 25+50 = 55%
