Camera question

What advantage does a camera provide on an airplane?

I am guessing that for recon missions you get a better detection level.

What about on other types/missions?

Just Recon.

Camera allows non recon planes to be good at recon missions. Recon planes themselves seem to perform the same no matter if they have camera or not.

From my own experience, cameras give Allied recon planes a decided edge. Sometime just one pass over a target will give you a very good report. Of course, training your crews is important as well.

Ki-36 has a camera as well, problem is the short range of the aircraft.

My info comes from the thread you started crsutton, post #5 from FatR.

"I once raised this question in the air thread and was told, that all the camera device does is giving the recon capability to planes that aren't normally listed as recon planes."

Yep, but as I said then my experience is that camera equipped recon give a significant boost to recon. In about 900 turns of play, I have not seen anything to contradict this. Allies have very poor recon until they get camera equipped planes. I consider them to be some of my most valuable assets. It is impossible for Japan to hide ships in a port within heavy bomber range. I am just getting the PBY liberator camera equipped recon aircraft and it is solid gold. My Japanese opponent has confirmed that his recon does not do nearly as well without cameras.

Results may vary for others.

I do so hope this is true and not just anecdotal. Lots of nice small undocumented touches in AE could easily have been overlooked as a 'feature'.

That is because the Recon pilot has very good memory ^^ [:D]

you would think all recon planes would have a camera mounted...and after a quick look it seems most recon planes did have Cameras so i an confused why this is not in game?

Another strange occurrence is the fact that the F4F-3P Wildcat, though used by the unit that received it as a fighter plane, is listed with a camera but cannot perform RECON missions.

I tried going into the editor and putting the camera first in the list of equipment (and the machine guns second), but no go. It still comes up as a fighter and thus has no RECON mission selection possibility. In its Type designation in the editor it is listed as O5 - Recon, but none of the Recon settings appear for missions.

Perhaps a request that the Mission list be expanded to include 'Recon' only when an aircraft has a camera, no matter what the base type?

What patch are you on? Early there was a bug, but they made a change so that any plane with a camera device can perform Recon.

Applied the most recent.

I went and checked, I have at least one FB group with a camera equipped plane that has recon orders and appears to be running the missions. Maybe post a save in tech support?

For a Camera device to work it needs to have some 'effect' value. This is used to increase the DL when recon is run.
It is also used to trigger the RECON mission option for non-recon type planes.

I'm playing the Guadalcanal scenario, and I believe this part was left out in the scenario design, as my F4F-3P squadron has cameras but no Recon Mission available.  It may be different in the Campaign scenarios.

Yeah, in my campaign of scen 2 they work fine and can be used as recon.
