IM JEALOUS....

It has begun!

After several days of regroupings, the men of the 6th Army stand on the Steppe, gazing towards the vast mass of buildings climbing the western shore of the Volga. This is it. Stalingrad.
The warm, dusty and dry days on the Kalmuk Steppe has been exchanged for a colder, damper climate. But it's still mild. It's raining constantly and visibility is low. The city lies shrouded in a wet, grey haze.
The roar of engines fills the air, and the combat recon units soar past the infantry on the front line. Their reports relayed in the next half hour will be crucial to the effort. Ivan must be stopped at the river bank!
A MC recon drives right into a minefield, and a motorcycle disappear in a disheartening blast of mud, blood and metal.
Close by, a PzIII falls victim to the last few weeks strained schedule and promply breaks down.
Reports from Oberst Goblin will follow..

Losses to mines are much higher than projected....especially because we are not to the city yet! It does not bode well to what will be encountered there....
Goblin- A Goblin lost 4 or 5 already

Take a peek under our hoods and check for yourself! All gasoline Maybach engines, baby!
Now, if you hear diesel engines, it's your own troops coming back from the front, at full speed! And they won't stop for quite a while..
Tanks?

{{{{ DESIGNER NOTE }}}}
Mines... mines represent more than just mines in this battle. They also represent boobytraps, dug in infanrty, fortified areas..ect.
The Germans had and has a great deal of units to overcome the mine threat!
The Russians are in for a long day indeed!

I finished the soviet first turn and sent the files back to Belisarius yesterday. Copy is on its way to you also, Jess. I´m out of cigars but have doubled the vodka rations! That should encourage a "spirited" defence!;)
Little contact yet. But we hear explosions in the distance...
A few Stugs approached Tatsinskaya airfield and had dismounting infantry pop smoke after they came under ATG fire. We expect a more determined assault very soon!
Pokey Gurmans

by mogami
OK See, it is those slow pokey gurmans holding up the show.
I don't blame them. Gazing into our great city they are moon struck with awe and immobilized with fear. They pee their pants and cry for momma. I think I'll lead a bayonet charge just to see their hair turn white.
Come on you stinkin Gurmans come and get it. We got nice shallow cozy holes in the dark black earth for you to rot in.
Turn 2

Not much to report. Moving according to plans, without any sight of the fell Ivan. Discovered a few more mined hexes, with the total loss of 2 men and an immobilized armored car. That I can live with, as long as the panzers don't step on them

Well. I ran 3 (three)(THREE!!) Motorcycle units up and down a road section until they were at max speed. Nothing happened. The road section was 10 or so hexes in length. Road clear! Nope. First tank up the road, BOOM!! Mine.
Hmmm. Ok, I will avoid the road, and go where my infantry have gone. It's clear. Nope. First tank up the path, BOOM!! Mine.
Hmmm. Ah well, I will now move towards the hospital with a StuG. BOOM!!

45mm ATG, just across the AT ditch, north side.
Hmmm.Ok, try this again, another StuG. BOOM!! Mine.
Hmmm. One more time. Move another StuG towards yonder hospital, BOOM!!

45mm ATG, didn't kill me though.
Hmmm. Time to recon with a Kuebelwagen. One of the two survivors after their mate found a mine last round. Moving south towards the hospital, BOOM!! Mine.
A 'fortified building' opened up on some of my infantry moving with the StuG force. MG's and light cannon inside.
It appears our mine locating ability is limited to being blown to hell. BOOM!! There's one.
Goblin- A Goblin took a Rolaids:mad:
