I came across this description of Darwin's port early 1942, in the below linked pdf.

"At that time Port Darwin, although an "anchor to
windward", was more of a name on the map than a
fueling station for the fleet. Surrounded by mango
swamps and having a temperature of 100 to 110 de
grees, it was separated from the rest of Australia by
the Great Australian Desert. An anchorage, with a
warehouse and an air field, it had but few oil storage
tanks—which contained British naval oil supplies—
and only one pier. The pier could not berth more
than two ships at a time and was in almost constant
use by freighters unloading supplies of food and equip
ment from south and southwest Australia."

What should this type of port be sized at for us mod freaks? Any thoughts?

I'd say a 1 or 2 at most. Sounds like it was little more than a quick stop-over on the way to bigger and better places.

Sounds like Neah Bay in 1968. Prince Rupert, Sitka, Juneau, and Skagway were all about that size.

Start at port-2. Get general info from manual Table 9.3.3 Port Size, and look at tonnage that can be docked. Port 1 can dock 6,000 tons. That's only 1 C1/C2 sized ship (or a couple more if they are dinky). Port 2 can dock 12,000 tons, so that's 2 C1s/C2s (or a couple more if dinky). And so on.

Remember, port size is the size of facilities, not the size of the harbor. Harbor can be HUGE, but with only 1 dock, it's a 1 or a 2. Port size isn't all that grainy a parameter, so use a judicious rule of reason (i.e., it's quite fair to pull it out of the brown place).
