Don't have the information at my fingertips to know when, for example, revenge class BB's removed the torpedoes.

Found it...

"The original outfit was four submerged 21" torpedo tubes, two on either n beam, one pair forward of A turret and the other pair aft of Y turret, in 1932 the after pair of tubes were removed and in 1938 the forward pair went."

Most BBs had their tubes removed prior to WWII. In fact, can't really think of any BB that did retain theirs.

Didn't Bismarck/Tirpitz have a couple of triple mounts on the fantail?

The Pocket Battleships did but Bis/Tirp didn't as far as I know {which is admittedly not far}.

Hello

As far as I know the Bismark did not had Torpedos. But the Tirpitz had 2 × Quadruple 533 mm G7a T1 torpedo tubes.

Hello,

I am glad you have confirmed they all were removed before WWII, but I am working on a 1920's scenario and need
to know how many Torpedoes were carried by each class to have the Ships correct in the database.

Thx!

IIRC there was exactly one instance of a BB/BC firing a torpedo that actually hit an enemy target at any time in history. I don't remember the source but again IIRC it occurred in WWII. It might have been in "Strategy & Tactics" way back when.

I believe the only time a battleship ever hit another battleship with a torpedo was in May 1941. HMS Rodney vs Bismarck.

Rodney's TT were never removed, but HMS Nelson had hers taken away between September 41 and April 42. They were both fitted with 2 x 24.5-inch submerged tubes.

That is correct - Tirpitz was given two quadruple mounts for its 53.3cm (21-inch) torpedoes, while Bismarck did not have TT.

HMS Royal Oak (Revenge Class) also had torps in WW2. Her original submerged TTs were removed in 1933-34, but she then had two twin 21in TTs fitted above deck, one on either beam.

Would Royal Oak's tubes been removed by the end of the war though? Royal Oak was sunk by U-47 on the morning of October 14, 1939, very early in the war.

It’s hard to say. Royal Oak was something of an oddity. The other four BBs of the Revenge/Royal Sovereign Class all had their TTs removed by 1934, and yet she had new TTs fitted in the same year. I think she may well have had her TTs removed because the aging Revenge Class BBs were only considered to be suitable for subsidiary roles in WW2 – such as shore bombardment.

Royal Oak is indeed the exception - the Royal Sovereign and Queen Elizabeth classes were ordered in 1930 to have their underwater TT's removed. As redcoat says for some reason the Oak got in turn 4 fixed above-water tubes! All I can think of is that since she was the 'best' of her class she would be used as the Flag of the Channel Squadron.

My guess is no - unless she was damaged and required lengthy repair work. The reason is that the UK dockyards had more than they could handle during the war, so taking an old tub (sorry Royal Oak) in just to have her TT's removed seems unlikely.
