For what?

In the British Commonwealth (at least, i cant speak for others), today is Remembrance Day where we stop at 1100hrs to commemorate the signing of the Armistice which led to the end of The Great War.

We also remember all who served and especially those who gave their lives in the service of their Country.

A poem by Lawrence Binyon has become its "anthem"

They shall not grow old, as
We that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years contemn
At the going down of the
Sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.

Lest We Forget.

Here in Poland, it's the Independence Day today.

On 17 October 1921, Britain's unknown soldier was given the US Medal of Honor, America's highest award for bravery, which hangs on a pillar near his grave. On 11 November 1921, the US unknown soldier was reciprocally awarded the Victoria Cross.

Here in Poland, it's the Independence Day today.

Wasn't Veteran's Day in the USA originally Armistice Day, later broadened to Veteran's to include the vet's of all wars?

If so, the best of Armistice Days to those who served in the Great War, and to their families and countries who remember them, and the best of Veterans Days to those vets who have served their countries at other times.

The origin and intent are the same, here in the New World. The name was changed to be more inclusive to all who serve and sacrifice for their country.

I would like to add my thanks to all who showed support while I was serving and to all my shipmates (yes even the Jarheads [:'(]) and other brothers in service, who are still serving. [&o]
