Are there any books to recommend about the historical period this game covers?

The manual actually has a list of books, films and graphic novels (in French) on the subject.

I'd recommend Red Victory: A History of the Russian Civil War, 1918-1921 by W. Bruce Lincoln

E.H Carr has writen the most comprehensive history of the Soviet Union, the first three volumes of which are "The Bolshevik Revolution." Though he dwells more on the political than military aspects, nobody else has really covered the area combining such breadth and detail with intellectual integrity.

Alexander Rabinowitch has written two even more detail volumes, but only on the bolsheviks coming to power and their first year.

Then there's Trotsky's History of the Russian Revolution. Again, it's more about the politics leading to the bolshevik siezure of power than the civil war but he also wrote several volumes of military writings which I never read.

My personal recommendation in the manual (which is distributed in the demo) are to read Orlando Figes' "A People Tragedy" if you want to understand the historical context. I find it a page turner, but it's huge (1000 pages). And/or to read Evan Mawdsley's book if you want to focus on the Military aspects of the civil war. [:)]
