Why a unit digs in or not

Occasionally a unit will not dig in even though all other units do dig in.
What are the factors that are used to determine if a unit digs in or not?

Ability to 'dig in' is determined by the "Can units dig-in? 0 = False, 1 = True" flag specified by column AP in the Elements file:

So it depends on the ground they are on.

With 4 soldiers in a unit, they may span different types of terrain elements, if one type is dig-in=true and the other=false, what terrain element will be applied?

You have to have a stretch of diggable terrain that is long enough to fit the trench otherwise they won't dig-in. iirc it's in the 3-5 element range but don't quote me on this. There may not be a 1:1 representation in the code per what you see on the screen either. I'd have to ask Steve. I'm going from anecdotal/personal observation.

Dont they need to be on the map to be dug in for a whole turn as well?

Yes and defending.... so they have time to prepare the positions.

By "defending" do you mean that the Battle Group was given either no orders or the "rest" order during strategic movement?
1. what is the effect of defending doing a continuous multiple period battle?
2. With stacked units, do rear battle groups that rest dig in?

<1 It occupied and had control of the map for at least 1 turn... it is not given a move order - Test what happens if it is on REST.
1. ?
2. TEST - should only happen if <1 conditions are met.
