Problem with latest patch

I am running XP pro, downloaded this game last year and played it heavily for several months, thank you for the great game! I updated to I believe the .4 patch, where cloning was introduced, before aI took a little vacation from the game. Since I recently started playing again I found the latest patch and downloaded it. Since then I have had problems with the music sounding very "choppy" cutting in and out and the game starts to run very poorly. I looked around the forums a bit and disabled the music for the entire game under the options. This works for about an hour every time I play, then the game starts to lag and the sound effects become horribly distorted. I will now reinstall the game and directly go to the new patch and see if that helps, as suggested in another thread. I will post wether it has worked or not, and I thought you may want to know this problem still exists. Perhaps you have any suggestions that might help? I happened to back up my version uptaded to .4, so if I can't fix it I will play with that for now, but then I miss out on the new stuff.

Update: I reinstalled TOS and then directly updated to the b60 patch and it took about 20 to 30 minutes before the sound became erractic and the game began to run poorly. Any suggestions?

Hey FASA,

I am also running XP Pro. I did a straight install, then updated to the latest patch. (Yes, I've had to clone one pilot already.) Are you running anything else in the background?  I play EVE (an MMORPG) and I've found that if I run it along with TOS (alt-tabbing back and forth), I can get sound errors.

Have you found any similar sound distortions with other games on your machine when you play for 30+ minutes?

I have seen some visual errors pop up in saved games - only with the artic maps - where black hexes show up as a deep red. When I switch to ALT-1 (old-style map) then the black hexes show up as normal. Going back to the improved view (ALT-6, I think) then I get the funky colors again.  NOTE: This only happens with my saved games and wasn't a big enough issue for me to report until I saw your thread.

No other programs running and no other sound problems. In fact I just reverted to my back up that has only been updated to b40? and it has been running fine for the last two hours. So it leads me to thinkin that it has to be some issue with the new patch, which is a real bummer since I miss out on the newest updates (new battle computers, injured jocks needing recover time, etc.).
So so far i have tried to relaod the program and install the new patch straight away with no success, tried turning all music off (which didn't work either), and have tested my older version that has no problems, so any suggestions on what to try next? And LordSteel you are using Xp pro and are having no issues with the latest patch?

It's probably a problem with the sound library and your soundcard. What card do you have ?

Try disabling music AND ambient sound in data\configs\tcc.cfg with

music_at_all = no

in the [TOS_WS_GENERAL] section of the file and

ambient_at_all = no

in the [TOS_WS_BATTLE] section

Thanks for the quick reply, I will try that I soon as I get the chance. At the moment I have no idea which soundcard I have.

I have to confess that this is no error. Do not really remember why I did that and I agree it is ugly. [:'(]

Great. Would be nice if you can tell me your brand of soundcard. I do not plan more patches but who knows.
