The manual says that supply must be within 250 action points of the original source. Is the 'original source' the highest level HQ?

I can answer that question now, but it brings up another.

The 'original supply source' is the supreme HQ.

Wierd thing is, if one does a supply trace from the supreme HQ to a unit, the range is different than from the 'immediate' HQ.

Example, in Case Yellow, French 41st Division supply range from its immediate HQ is 67 APs, but if traced directly from the Supreme HQ, it is 55 APs. So in this instance, why not just change HQ to the Supreme HQ?

Because supply might be send along a more direct line then. But the unit will lose out on all the experience and bonusses in the management layers in between.

Thx. I haven't gotten that far along in understanding the game to take into consideration such things as experience.

I'll provide a more detailed answer to this.

Supply flows from the highest level HQ through each subordinate HQ all the way down to the unit for the players. For the AI it only flows from the highest level HQ to the unit, which is the only bonus the AI gets over a human player. This entire chain must be below 100 APs for full supply to flow at 100%.

If you assigned all your units to the highest level HQ to get supply to flow with less APs, those units would only have access to the Action Cards of the highest level HQ. They would not be able to have action cards from any other HQ played on them. Also, the stacking penalty for attacking/defending would increase. All HQs have a percentage number assigned to them on their card. The higher this number, the more stacking points you can have for units assigned to that HQ without penalties. Assigning more units to a HQ than their staff can handle (the S:T number or Staff to Troops) decreases this percentage multiplier.

Now I have a related question since I thought so far that supply originates in fixed map locations (given in scenario description) and not with the highest HQ.I thought it is moved from that fixed map location through the chain of command.

The question: If supply originates in the highest HQ, does it make sense to move this highest HQ nearer to the front in order to shorted supply routes?

It does not really make sense since HQs do not generate supply, it comes from production centers which should be fixed locations on the map.

Supply comes from the supply sources, but the APs between the highest level HQ and the supply source don't count in the calculation of the supply path.

So yes, you should make sure your highest level HQ is close to the front, but no too close. I have no idea what happens if the highest level HQ cannot trace a path to the supply source.

Thank you for explaining this. I played this wrong so far and left the OKH (or equivalent for other nations) always in its original position.
So yes, you should make sure your highest level HQ is close to the front, but no too close.

Yes, those aging Generals may not be fit for front line duty any more.

Haha, I bet you that Foch would have been at the front lines at age 100.

The supply system will then try to send the supply to lower HQs. So even if the top HQ is taken out of action you can still continue the fight.
