First time I run the game I get:

Vista 64k with 4GB of ram. There's no excuse for this kind of crashing.

Vista maybe? I have a similar rig but I wiped Vista off when Win 7 came out...

Need more info when it happened. 1.00 had some problems with CPU usage, so trying 1.01 wouldn't hurt.
You also may check your sound and video drivers. There was similar problem reported.
Otherwise, Gary is using Vista to build the game, so it should run fine.

I'm on Vista and don't have this problem.
But it's 32 bit

Actually there is an excuse, its called User Error. Without proper video drivers, the game won't run. Without DirectX the game won't run.

BTW, I have been testing the WitE on my workstation at work for 18 months. It is Vista 64 bit but with 12 GB RAM.
I never ever had a crash (believe it or not [:)]) neither at home nor at work during all ALPHA and BETA WitE testing except in some AI vs. AI tests that spanned for hundreds of turns (i.e. grand campaign test runs - I think I did at least 25 of those)!
