Mud, what am I missing?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

Mud, what am I missing?

Post by abulbulian »

Ok, mud turn is bad I get that. But why the heck did my units that were a turn before displaying a 12-14 CV value go down to a 1? They are within there corp HQ range and seem to have 60% supplies? I think that's insane considering they where well supplied just a week before and have not had combat.

What am I missing? I don't even want to attempt to play axis against a human, seems they just get devastated in mud, and I have not even got to winter blizzard yet. Lol, it should be historic, but it would be nice to know how to avoid seem your units CV drop by a factor of /10.

Anybody having similar issues?

Thanks

Mud is bad news for both sides. Even if you are in supply. It's a time out, your offensive capabilities will be negligible, and movement is hugely hindered.

You won't get devastated in mud because the Red Army is equally hit by it. They can't hardly attack you, either. Mud is the pause that refreshes the Red Army, but it's not blizzard.

I could check the supply of the units. When ever i see what u see, with a unit dropping to 1, its cuz its in Red/isolated supply.
Use shift O or the icon on the map information menu. I bet its why u u see the low CV. Seems in mud supply lines are halved so i have had plenty a isolated units in my mud turns.

Hope it helps,

The late rasputitsa in June, 1812 did more to hurt Napoleon in 1812 than the later snow. And he made it to Moscow.

The German army in 1941 had more horses than the french/Allied army in 1814....

how do you get isolated from supply when in rng of corp HQ? Is there a way to determine when this will happen before you end a turn?

an ounce of prevention.....

The corps HQ is too far from a working RR. Aka it doesnt get any supply to distribute on.
Can u check before, easily no, but if im correct in that supply lines are halved u cuz check the supply of the corps HQ and see if its more of less than half the max distance to an RR on turns before u expect mud.

Hope it helps,

The red border around the unit means it's isolated. You must be over 100 MP from a railhead (not as hard to do in mud where clear terrain is 4 MPs per hex). If you are over 100 MPs from a railhead you are isolated.

I believe there are two tests for suppling units, the range and distance in terms of movement points.  The mud makes the movement points higher, so you can go from supplied to not supplied even if the units haven't moved....maybe?

Historically this is the effect of mud, when the roads are several feet deep in mud movement off rail becomes almost impossible and as for prevention, you can never be sure what will happen next week, apart from not embarking on ambitious operations at times of the year when mud is likely. [:)]

One point to note for PBEM games is that if Isolated by supply, units that are attacked stand a high chance of being shattered.

Once AGC and AGS start approaching The line from Kharkov to Stalino, you need to check and double check your supply ranges for when the mud arrives. Clever SU players will be able to work out which units are likely to be isolated and will pounce on them.

Against the AI you can get away with being isolated by supply.

edit: a major reason why I don't play with random weather; if you get early mud AGS could be in a sticky situation in more ways than one.

ok know that I now why it happened I think it's possibly wrong to just make these units CV one pt with some general formula not considering other aspects of the unit. Here's why

1) previous turn units were fine and happy (not isolated)
2) currently units have 60% supply and ammo... fuel is 100% ( some units have more than 100%)
3) moral is high and experience is high

** oh by the way... flew in like 60 tons of supply to unit.. curious and didn't change it's CV

Maybe my issues is with the CV that is displayed?

I know nothing about the design decisions that were made in this game, but looking at the actual events if 1941 -

Everything fine, sun is shining, troops moving well along the dusty roads, lots of supplies available, then :

It rains for a week, the roads turn to deep mud, small streams turn into rivers, you cannot prepare, apart from to know that it is likely to happen at certain times of the year.

Your supply dump is full of goodies, but you cannot move it out to the units - CV nearly 0
Trucks that carry your infantry and tow their equipment, cannot move - CV nearly 0
The sticky mud pulls the boots off the well fed, high morale men's feet as they try to march - CV nearly 0
Tanks full of fuel and ammo, can move, but no support from other units, no refuel if they go anywhere - CV nearly 0
Tanks also burning out their engines towing trucks to keep essential supplies of food moving - CV nearly 0
Airfields waterlogged and weather is low cloud and rain, aircraft full of fuel, can't fly - CV nearly 0
Air Transport Supplies that do reach the airfields cannot be moved out to the troops - CV nearly 0

Then it snows ! [:)]

OK, I'm exaggerating a bit, but the general idea is there, I don't know if the CV should drop that much and I am still in the scenarios, haven't reached the mud yet (did in WIR). Units in cities should not suffer so much drop, as provided they have a rail link, they should not be affected so much by the mud effects.

I went hiking a month ago and missed the footpath - decided to take a short cut around the edges of a ploughed field. Mud! My CV fell to about minus 100!!! [X(]

Realistically speaking, you may have the supply lines, but your supply trucks are all stuck in the mud.

I've seen the same thing and believe it to be a bit too drastic.  Units that still have decent supply should at least be able to defend themselves.  Maybe the attack value with 1 for abulbulian's units, but the defend value was probably still decent?  If not, then would agree something not right.
