While playing last night, I started a game with ship design on manual and progressed far enough to have a cruiser design available. I built a few. Shortly after, I decided to put ship design back on auto and my build screen says that I have no designs available to be built. Looks like a flaw in the AI design process.

This might be because the AI is designing cruisers larger than your maximum ship construction size.

The AI will attempt to modify the designs of your smaller military ships (escort, frigate, destroyer) to ensure that they come under your current construction size limits. But cruisers and capital ships are designed for maximum power, without regard for size limits.
