Limit on number of shipsets?

Hi everyone, I want to install as many shipsets as I can (you guys are awesome!). Is there a limit to the number of ship families I can have?

22 as far as I understand (sets 0-21)

hehe, I was just wondering this too. What happens if I have a family23 shipset? Am I correct in assuming it'll crash the game? Also, are there any plans to patch this?

It's not a patch, it's intentional. Elliot (the developer) limited the number to 22 because of fears that shipset artwork would use up too much memory if there were too many families loaded at once.

I'd still like to encourage this be patched. If modders want to implement 25-30 shipsets, why not?

Quick somewhat related question, can you have alternate models (ingame) for two of the same class ships (ie. two unique Escort models)?

yes, but the design for the ships must be different in order for you to choose a different image.....you don't need to change anything else aside from the picture, mind you, but it has do be done manually so if you want this for all the escorts let's say it will be tedious to do
but if you already have two or more escort types, it would indeed be useful to differentiate them like this also

Try playing with 22 different shipsets first, then you might see why. I'm lucky, I have a new computer with an I-7 Core and 12 GB of RAM, but most people don't have that monster I do and it really hits their memory. Also, even my computer will have a slowdown a few hours into a 1400 system game...when I had my old computer, which was barely minimum specs, the game got very slow on bigger galaxies.

Well you can have a max of 20 Empires at the start of the game with 2 more story based Empires if you got those victory conditions and storylines on.  So not sure any more shipsets would be of use.  If you are playing a mod that doesn't use the DW storyline you have two spare shipsets to add extra ships like Igard is working on.

The limit used to be 9, it has already been patched up to 22.

Although I'm currently running a mod with 32 races, 10 of which only appear on map as independents to be gobbled up by the 20 empires. So yes you can have more than 20 races, but...since you can only have 22 (1 player + 19 AI + 2 storyline) empires in the game, there is no need for more than 22 shipsets. If an independent goes full empire, it will just have to use a recycled shipset.

And I have yet to see an independent go empire unless one of the starting 19 AI empires is wiped out.
