Bug Report -- Unhandled Exception

Attached is the save a bit before the crash. I am not sure if it was me or not as the game has been stable so far. Anyhow I was showing a friend Harpoon and he was asking how I knew the active radar range was from a hawkeye. I proceeded to the formation editor and tried to click on what I thought was the Hawkeye. When I clicked it I got the crash.

Mr Ryan,
I'll take a look at this and see what I can find. If there's an identifiable issue I'll get it listed in Mantis (bug tracker) and have the cause hunted down. I have had this issue raise its head a couple times while using the scenario editor. My example was whilst using the Tab key to select a change in speed setting so I already have an example of this issue listed for the AGSI programmers to look at.
May I ask which database you were using along with anything else you can recall that was happening in the game at the time?
Cheers
Darren

I was using the HUD3, (Nice job btw).....Was playing China takes Taiwan and the Nimitz CVBG is tasked to take them out, plus I had 2 subs.
I was just trying to click on the hawkeye in the FE when it crashed.
Also, I need to find the list that explained what to do with a laptop for shortcut keys etc...
I no longer have access to Mantis as I have been out of the loop for a couple of years.

Ethan,
I knew who you were, I was just trying to avoid disclosing too much in case you were concerned about privacy etc. It's good to see you back after so long and thanks for the compliment regarding the HUD3. Unfortunately I've obviously overloaded the LA's magazine. I've been working through the scens in an attempt to remove those "overload" issues although here I've missed one...
The next update for the HUD3 will see another step toward an even better game play experience, with work on the sonars etc. I'd been trying to follow the new sonar system guidelines when in reality, my original sonar work conducted with the HUD-II had, as luck would have it almost been using values that work seamlessly with our new sonar systems. AGSI have also included an option to log the sonar detection checks, although I don't recommend players turning that logging option on as it doesn't take long before you start collecting large log files. It's really a development tool and is something that DB editors should become familiar with if they're aiming for greater accuracy.
Thanks for the report and your time playing through the scenario. If you'd like to test out some new scenarios and even the rebuilds I'm working on of both HUD and HUD-II scenarios, some of which are now 15 years old and represent a good deal of the game's history, just let me know and we can exchange contact details so I can forward any material you'd like to take a look at. This applies to other players as well. I'm always on the lookout for interested people who are prepared to contribute and I'm always prepared to include my testers in the HUD3 credits. I've been discussing some ideas about starting work on a Korean Battleset to examine the, "What ifs?" associated with the current tensions on the Peninsular.
Thanks again for your time and effort and it's great to see you back.
Cheers
Darren

I think a Modern Korean set would be fantastic! I personally think South Korea can handle its own for the most part and this would be a great way to see 'What if'. What if Japan joined the fray?
As for the crash, why would the sub loadout cause that error at that point? Maybe that was just a coincidence?
Anyhow when I was reading the log and saw this,
**** Error ****
Weapon Magazine Los Angeles Torpedo Room (22) is overfilled, discarding excess weapons
1 UGM-109D T'hawk BlkIIB TLAM-D
heaved overboard... "
I started laughing, first the programmer had a sense of humor for sure and it would be $1 million bucks overboard. They would have found a spot in the Galley to store it
I wasn't sure if JRyan would be remembered per se, its been a while.
Keep up the great work!

Hi Darren,
You can also rely on me for your Korean battleset. I went to Korea some years ago, I've still some friends up there.Always interested in what's going on in "calm morning country".

Darren you can develop validation checks in MS Access to watch for this kind of stuff.

Hi Mike,
Not even necessary to develop any MS Access stuff. When launching the editor, there's a useful tool called "sanity check". It points out every small thing as 'warning', medium things as 'WARNING' and critical ones as 'ERROR', via some Wordpad files by nature of db asset (mount,loadout...).
Have a nice day folks;

Gunny the editor is Access and the Sanity Check is a validation check.
I'm glad the guys added that is it is helpful in the context of checking stuff in a large database. Sounds like Darren just needed to run it though huh?

Yes Mike, it's really a 'must do' feature. Sometimes has some unexpected answers, looks like the editor's engine doesn't like multiple entries (e.g: doesn't want to see 8/8 Mk-82LDGP 3 times, prefers 24/24). It also warns if there's something wrong with modus operandi of sensors (e.g: passive sensor with values making it behave like active).
Have a nice day, regards,
François "Gunny" Guérin

Michael,
I think you may have the wrong idea about these checks. The issue reported in regard to the excess weapons is actually related to a SEM file that has been saved with more weapons than the Platform's magazine has a capacity for.
There is no check in the database editors for this issue as it's simply not a DB issue. It's a Scenario/SEM file problem.
For example:
A SSN 688 Los Angeles Class Sub
Standard Magazine Loadout
Los Angeles Torpedo Room (22) - The 22 represents the maximum RL capacity whereas the maximum number of weapon "slots" for this magazine is set to 23. An empty "slot" is required to allow for players to be able to change their torpedo tube loadout. A loaded weapon is removed and has to be "placed" somewhere before a different weapon is loaded.
RGM-84C - Harpoon IB (0/6) v303
UUM-44A SUBROC (0/6) v300
Mk48 Mod 5 ADCAP (14/22) v303
Mk48 Mod 1 - 4 (0/22) v303
UGM-109C T'hawk BlkIIA TLAM-C (6/8) v303
UGM-109D T'hawk BlkIIB TLAM-D (2/8) v300
UGM-109A T'hawk BlkI TLAM-N (0/8) v300
UGM-109B T'hawk BlkI TASM (0/8) v303
RGM-84F - Harpoon ID [#] (0/6) v303
RGM-84D - Harpoon IC (0/6) v303
So we have:
14/22 x Mk48 Mod 5 ADCAP (14 of a Maximum 22 weapons)
6/8 x UGM-109C T'hawk BlkIIA TLAM-C (6 of a maximum 8 weapons)
2/8 x UGM-109D T'hawk BlkIIB TLAM-D (2 of a maximum 8 weapons)
= 22 weapons
Of course you can overload one or more of the individual weapon records which will then cause the triggering of the Magazine check and you'll receive the message relating to something or other being thrown overboard... I have included an example of the way in which you might overload a platform magazine and be able to save the scenario, and therefore cause the situation which will lead to the dumping of excess weapons.
The Scenario Ethan was playing was last updated on the 22nd of May 2009. The soon to be released updated version will have the extra UGM-109D Tomahawk removed. Please note it won't be because of any validation check or otherwise.
A final note about these checks is that not all of them are valid themselves in relation to any particular database. The checks are really nothing more than ways of bringing any possible issues with the relevant database to the Editor's attention. So even if you think, "Darren just needed to run it though huh?" you'd be barking up the wrong tree, wouldn't you? Woof Woof...
Cheers
Darren

Yeah if its outside the DB you can't leverage any of access's features to help. My first thought was something with the weapons records. Thats too bad really as it wasn't that hard of a fix.
Thanks for spending the time to look at this [:)]

Michael,
It's actually another reason I started the "feedback" thread. Since short of checking every platform with a magazine in any particular scenario, there's no automated way to run such a check. Ethan's report has lessened the load on me to have to conduct such time consuming processes and is an example of what user feedback can provide to designers and editors.
Also and not aimed at you specifically, I don't just do the required work on the HUD3 and associated scenarios. At present I'm the Beta Tester, as in there's one of me... So having missed a couple of excess weapons in two subs in Ethan's report, I'll apologise but hope people can understand I'm going to miss something every now and again. I also hope to release an update for the new mission parameters as there were several ability definitions missing from the files. Due to the holiday period I'm waiting for Russell to get back to work and will update the files as soon as he gets back and confirms my changes are 100%.
Players may find platforms not following all of their sensor settings in regard to active/passive timings and the percentage variances. So even though I'd like nothing more than to concentrate on one particular aspect of the game, sometimes with the workload I face some things will slip through the net. that's no excuse so I'll apologise in advance for the weapon overloads now.
I'm heading out for a couple of hours but expect I'll be able to start forwarding files to Frans for inclusion on his website in the next 24 to 36 hours. I had hoped to send him fully completed battlesets, although I think I'll probably close off the DB and start sending small packages of scens for release. I agree it would be better to have constant releases, but I'm one person with more tasks than I have arms for... [:(] I also face constant DB updates and as we all know with every even minor Database edit, even something as simple as a single weapon record edit, every existing scenario has to be updated. I understand the signature idea, but curse it repeatedly for the time consumption it involves.
Cheers
Darren

Back to the Korean battleset idea, here's an interesting article picked up on RIA Novosti (Russian press agency) today:

Probably over dramatic but after spending the day visiting possible wedding venues I'd say somebody has you beat![:)]
Real sorry though that you feel overwhelmed with all this responsibility and no worries about the scenario issue. Its just a game man and was honestly trying to give you some ideas to lighten the load a bit.
Is there any chance the scenario rebuild functionality could be used to fix the problem if not on the db end?

Well just to liven it up a bit,
Weapon Magazine Los Angeles Torpedo Room (22) is overfilled, discarding excess weapons
1 UGM-109D T'hawk BlkIIB TLAM-D heaved overboard.[/b]..
I have never seen that before, is it in the AAR or just a programmers sense of humor? To me that was funny as hell. Someone had a laugh besides me on this one....Kind of a Harpoon Easter egg.
No sweat Darren, Its not that big a deal. I would send you the final save file, but alas, I had to do a windows restore for the damn windows indexer, damn piece of **** this (cidaemon.exe) file just would not stop, I lost my files.
I will try and help you if I can...
