What's your worst mistake in WIR?

Mine was after a succesful winter campaign as Soviet in winter of '42-'43. I spent the rainy spring re-organizing (changing HQ units, upgrading tanks ASO) my lines for the summer offensive that I planned. I gave 2nd Belorussian front command (that HQ unit had been sitting far behind the lines containing some crap units that I didn't want to spend replacements on) to Zhukov and planned to have it spearhead my assault with the not too unrealistic goal of reaching Eastern Prussia. When summer came I noticed that the armies of 2nd Belorussian front looked very weak... I had forgotten to alter the replacement value for the front. It had been sitting at 0% for the entire spring. :o

Mine was setting all of my HQ replacements at 95% as the Germans from the beginning of the 41 scenario. Most of these men froze to death, leaving my infantry pool almost nonexistent, and the units which are now receiving replacements have experience of 76:(
Coupled with that, I was building and receiving too many fighters at the front causing my experience there to degrade as well.
Then, I kept all my units entrenched at the front through the pre-blizzard turns. My opponent's counteroffensive was vicious.
The end result of these errors was that in the spring rain period of 42, I'm only 2-3 hexes where I was in june 41.

I might have to look into that- I never thought of doing that actually, waiting for 42 to increase.

Actually, i think i am doing my worst mistake now.
As Russia, i sent coutnerattacks way too soon, left too many units to fight on not important sectors.
I inflicted heavy losses to german side, with what i think a good ratio (5 russians for 1 german) but i lost 30.000+ squads end of july...
i'll tell you more when it's done.
by the way, am i playing against you Preuss, or did i get confused with surnames ?
i made same mistakes with Hq too. forgot to look at replacemetn level at start.

best regards.

You're right Bernard, it is me you're playing against. Slowed me down quite a bit too.

All

The worst mistake you can make as German is imagine you can hold the line in the '41 Blizzard.
ALL Pz/Art/Stg/Pzjag/Mot units go to the rear and you hold the line with Inf Divs only.
Once Blizzard starts defend for 1 turn then bug out 2 hexes back. repeat till blizzard ends.
You can win in '42 only if you lost minimal squads
(15000/20000) in blizzard. Give up ground, it has no VP value. Better to start '42 with good forces
at Riga/Uman Line than weak Korps at the Pskov/Dnep line.

Strategy means working out what needs to be held to win.

I always did that! Is that bad enough???

My only excuse is that I played the Germans only once in the '41 campaign against a human opponent and, well, the losses were high...

Maybe I should think about that. ;)

Worst case scenario

Mine was trying to play a good German opponent in 41 at even level. Never had a chance. He was drunk in the Moscow dance halls before you could say "vodka."

Has anyone actually beaten a human German even level in '41, or am I more incompetent than even I assume??:)

I've held out in Moscow till summer of 42' in one game, and am busily pushing another German back towards Mohilev in the blizzard season with a reasonably intact army.
If the Red player witdraws and never stands till at the gates of Moscow, Leningrad, or Rostov, he can hold Moscow pretty ably. If he tries to put up some defensive lines west of those areas, he'll eventually lose more than he can replace. Either way...there's plenty of room to stuff up. Digging in en masse, thereby taking away the mobility of the Panzers is the only way to be successful. I'd like to see a "demo" of this game doing exactly what they did back then.
Some guys are great at slowing me down by holding cities in some strength...it never seems to work for me...then there's my pathological fear of leaving my lads behind to be surrounded.

the place to do that is near kiev along the dniepr i held out until the begin of november 1941 Vs humanthe i had to withdraw because my northern flank was brokeni eventually held out at karkov and in winter i got to the dnieper line again.
