Sherman versus Tiger

I am trying to understand how the game system resolves exchanges between tanks - In the tutorial scenario a reduced Sherman unit - down to 2 tanks engaged a fully outfitted Tiger tank unit with 7 tanks after a half hour exchange the Shermans took out 2 tigers and caused the rest to rout, without a loss to their 2 tanks. The range was about 100-200 meter. How does the system manage this to get to a result like this?

Thanks

There are so many factors that could have affected the outcome.
  • What was the terrain occupied by the Shermans and by the Tigers?
  • What was the visibility?
  • What was the combat effectiveness values ( ie morale, cohesion, fatigue ) for both units before the engagement?
  • What were their supply situations? Did both have AArm ammunition.

At under 500m a Sherman can quite effectively deal with a Tiger from a flank shot. Given that in the congested terrain of the Ardenne it is nigh impossible to present a frontal aspect all the time, then the Tigers at 200m range would be very vulnerable. If they were ambushed, with two KIAs then I'm not surprised the rest of the Tiger unit ran away.

The tigers in BFTB won't be much use until they get out into open terrain. I ran a little 8-hour test battle with 9 Tiger I's defending an objective on open ground assaulted by 45 sherman 75's and 15 firefly 76's out of a ravine.

The Tiger I's got 27 kills versus the 1 lost.

Changed the scenario to 6 Tiger II's and the outcome was 13 Shermans KO'd VS 0 Tigers. The Tiger Platoon ran out of AP ammo otherwise I think it would have been even bloodier.

Don't have precise items

Shermans were at edge of woods and Tigers were in the open
Visibility was not an issue
Combat effectiveness - don't know exact number - but Sherman unit had lost over half it's tanks - The Tiger unit had no losses and had minimal action - but had been shelled
Supply was fine for both

Part of the question I was asking is does the game match up penetration valus to armor values? (or anti-armor value to armor value) ...and does it randomly determine facing (given there it not a unit piece for each tank) or is that determined from the direction the unit is moving?

Thanks

Each round is resolved individually against a specified target. For AArm fire a specific AFV will be selected from the available targets. Its facing will be determined in part by the unit facing but with mods and some randomness. Then the probability of hitting the target is determined. This is influenced by the size of the target, whether its moving, firing or halted, the muzzle velocity of the firing weapon, the effectiveness of the crew, the effectiveness of the target, the accuracy of the weapon at the given range etc. If a hit is determined then it determins if the target is killed or not. If the penetration exceeds the armour thickness at the angle of impact, modified by a little randomness, then the target is KIA.
